There's speculation that the Southeastern bidders may look to replace the Electrostar fleet as well as the Networkers.

Could, with a bit of work, Southern take them on?

Infrastructure work required:
Electrification of Uckfield Branch and Marshlink (AC- see below)
Work to make the entire system work with 4/8/12 20m carriages throughout

Fleet work:
Use intermediates from the 377/7 and /7 fleets to bring the 377/3 and 375/3 fleets to 4 cars for a uniform fleet length
Common specification: same SDO, bodyside cameras, cab monitors throughout. All to be fully equipped for future AC roll out and for dual voltage services on Uckfield, Marshlink and West London WCML services.
Three fleets:
Metro- lots of standing space, narrowish 2+2. Dedicated fleet, distinct routes, own depots, separate driver pool, ripe and ready for a TfL takeover
Mainline & Coastal: wider 2+2
Gatwick Express: Same seats as Mainline, but less, with more luggage racks

No First Class.

Displaced fleet:
313s & 455s to scrap
171s to Northern as 170s
378s to GN (displacing remaining 365s) and GWR

No idea where the 376s would go.

Just a musing, not entirely serious.

What would work the Uckfield line and the Ashford line if you release the 171s elsewhere ?

378s are on London Overground not SE.

Typo for 387, yes!

Also, the release of the 171s was, as stated, dependent upon electrifying those lines. I made that clear up front, surely?

Can't see the just refurbished 375's going anywhere. The 376's will need to go as any NW replacement will have in cab monitors and it means that NR can get rid of the thousands of platform monitors- with all their costs, in the SE metro area.
