Interesting! Might as well have just made it the whole damn coach!

Indeed. I always made sure it was in the other one. I think there were some of those little glass screens to separate off the smoking area, but since they covered less than half the cross-section of the coach they were pretty ineffective.

I can't remember Central Trains ever allowing smoking.

According to NRE in 2000 only Anglia, Midland Mainline, GNER, Virgin, South West Trains and Scotrail Sleeper trains allowed smoking on some services.
