I came across this great film today, courtesy of Noel Dolphin via twitter. It's an electrification renewal project in Switzerland so the (sparse) commentary is in German but that won't stop your enjoyment of it. Originally planned for 600 night shifts it was instead done in a nine day blockade. As electrification is on everyone's mind at the moment I found the techniques used absolutely fascinating and I wonder what the engineers lurking on here think...

Can we bring them here although all our "can't do that" people may increase it to a year or so.

I`ve always said if Network rail can`t do it, don`t give up on electrification, just get the Germans in on the job.

Pity no english version. Anyone trabslate?
Quite a feat to do 16km of electrification in 9 days although it should be noted that all the bases where already in.
I doubt Network rails contractors even with there recently re-learned skills could get anywhere near that.
Also I wonder how long after the 9 day blockade was needed for the testing and the associated paper chase.

Let us use the same methods and H&S as them and I think we could do it. Although there'd be no jobs for the reporting snakes to be able to stand teams down because they are not following the strict H&S crap. I don't see anyone in the MEWPs there wearing safety harnesses, not one of them are wearing safety glasses, and only a few are wearing gloves (definitely not cut 5 either), yet we're constantly told that if we don't we'll be stood down or thrown off the job. As for the lads climbing the mast to rig for pulling the earth wire, they'd very quickly be thrown off and have their PTS revoked for that over here. Funnily enough the regs we're made to go by are supposedly from the EU??????????

Looks like very few interfering and just letting the lads get on with the job. Also presume the ground work has been done properly and reported back, as they are mounting sps on the masts prior to installation. From experience over here, as builts of the foundations never get back in time so require sps to be installed on track. Very rare to see conventional working along side a train on electrification, this should be done more as they can carry more.
