University of Sheffield, Furrer+Frey and Network Rail are looking for a PhD student for a project on improving overhead line electrification wear and tear to essentially prevent dewirements and to reduce maintenance time/costs.

If you've got a 1st or a 2:1 in the physical sciences, applied mathematics, engineering or materials science (or a different discipline but have significant experience) and an interest in railways and electrification, plus the usual focus on your own and others safety when working in a potentially dangerous environment, then this could be for you.

You get four supervisors - two from Sheffield, one from F+F and one from NR.

Full details on the FindAPhd website.

I'm just spreading the word on this one, and any queries should be sent to the contacts listed on the page above.

That sounds very interesting, and Sheffield's a great place to spend three years applied drinking contributing to future transport knowledge.
