There was a short overrun (including catenary wire) on the Shrewsbury line when the OHLE was first installed in the 1960s and then it was extended to Oxley around 1972 using simple 'tram wire'. 50 years later it's still possible to spot the point of transition between the two types of electrification just after branching off at Wolverhampton North Jct. A short section of the Oxley Chord was (and AFAIK still is) electrified at that time from Stafford Road Jct, presumably in case of misroutings of trains leaving Oxley Depot.
The short length of wiring on to Oxley chord at Stafford Rd Jn was to allow the electrically hauled sets to be shunted on to the ‘up side’ at Oxley. There was just enough wire to get a full Dvt set over the crossover on Oxley viaduct with the road set towards the Chord. It wasn’t possible to do the move with a full set without using the Chord line because at the time there was a set of catch points just south of Stafford Rd Jn on the line to Wolves North Jn.
The ‘trolley wire’ electrification from Wolves North to Oxley still means there is a 25mph speed restriction imposed for all electric traction in the area.

On my 1980's Lego model railway, a diode in series with the power rails for a dead-end siding would cause the train to stop in the siding before reaching the buffers, but be able to come back out of the siding when the power controller was reversed.

If only it were that simple on the real railway.

If only it were that simple on the real railway.
On a railway with technology way before the 1980s, (i.e. 750VDC) that would be possible, assuming the siding was long enough for a 100+ tonne train to coast to a stop before the buffers were reached. :)

The lostock line to wigan has an overrun from the preston line until it gets extended to wigan north western whenever that will be.
It wasn’t intended to be an overrun, they did quite a bit of piling on the line.

I don't know about the specific locations you mention but typically at junctions it is provided for a short distance for overrun protection in case of wrong route as you hypothesise. The driver maybe should challenge the route but it makes things a lot easier if there is some mistake.

Which is a Good Thing, but not always successful; Such as the incident I was involved in where a 6-car EMU was wrong routed and ran beyond the end of the overrun OLE. Staff attended and confirmed that another 6-car would be able to attach to and haul back the stranded train while still under the wires, only to also run off the OLE......

That's not an overrun though - it's so electric trains can access Oxley depot. It was added in the early 1970s, a few years after the main WCML electrification in the West Midlands area went 'live'.

IIRC that was advertised at the time as the first section of the former GWR to be electrified.
