Electric/Diesel Locomotives?

the class 73 runs on both Diesel and 3rd Rail as do some others
Why don't we have locomotives that run on Diesel power but also have a pantograph so can run on Overhead Wires
This would be great for Multiple Units and DEMU's as the power could go straight to the motors.

Possibly because the diesel engine is so heavy?

Perhaps because a diesel engine needs a generator attached to it, and OHLE requires a transformer to be fitted to the loco. Both very bulky bits of kit

I think there's one in France that can run off all 3, but I might be mistaken. You could have a double loco welded together (like a class 13 but bigger obviously)

Would be a bit pointless though, increasing length and weight without increasing power...longer trains, slower acceleraton etc

It's one of the many things wanted for the frankenstien IEP trains (or at least some of them). Obviously it is technically feasible- the traction motors should in theory be able to operate without "knowing" whether the electricity is coming from the prime-mover or via a pantograph and transformer. As said, it's mainly a matter of weight.

The prototype 210 was designed to work in multiple with 2nd generation EMUS , also the 1st refurbished 205 was also fitted with controls for multiple working with EMU's, OK not quite a hybrid and wouldnt be able to drag the emu away from the volts but it was a start.

A practical standard gauge electro diesel should be feasible, the metre gauge FEVE system in Spain have a set of quite powerful electro (1500V DC) -diesels which are used singly and in pairs on heavy freights.

I think the key thing with them is the 1500v, which doesn't need a transformer. 25Kv does however.
