Election Canvassing

If canvassers showed up on your doorstep on behalf of a local political party, what would be the main issues you would question them on?

I canvass on behalf of a party (won't say which one, though some of you probably know) in order to keep the thread neutral.

I'm just trying to get an idea of the most important issues currently facing the electorate. The economy? Immigration? Pensions? The EU?

I know I could just use YouGov, or a statistics office, but I would be interested to see what the forum comes up with.

What would you ask your MP, or your councillor about?

Oh, and to save us valuable time, throwing hot coal, or gravel, or shouting abuse, is not an option.

What is your stance towards our continued involvement in the EU and why? If you are against, is Britain able to forge a third way in our relationship towards Europe? If you are for, should we embrace full European integration, or should we continue to be cautious? Currently we seem to be getting the worst of both worlds.

What is your stance on multiculturalism, and do you believe it benefits Britain, and why?

Is immigration harmful or beneficial, from both a cultural and economic point of view?

What will you do to benefit infrastructure?

What will you do to benefit education? Should children be split on ability, or has the comprehensive system been a success?

What will you do to ensure equality of opportunity?

In what ways will the press be held accountable for their actions?

What is your stance on the recent furore on internet anonymity?

How will drug legislation react to vast increase in production of varieties of legal highs? Currently the system cannot keep up.

What is your stance towards criminal justice? Will the primary focus be on retribution or rehabilitation?

In what ways do you think government should be more transparent?

Will there be curbs on the excesses of press freedom? If, indeed, there are any excesses in your opinion.

How do you view "hate speech" acts? Do you think freedom of speech should be enshrined in law?

I can probably come up with a few more, but that's what I could think of in a few minutes.

I can honestly say that I haven't been canvassed since I was in a halls of residence over fifteen years ago, so I'd probably faint out of shock.

Local railway services on the Hallam line would be mentioned after the smelling salts though.

If it's the party I will be voting for I tell them not to waste any time here, they've got my vote, get on and talk to other households.

If it's any other party I will keep them talking as long as possible on any subject I can think of in order to slow them down on their rounds...

Now for the next general election I might have to decline all of them for the second reason.

Other than the railway, my questions would be about:

The low wage economy.
Housing provision
corporate tax avoidence
Judicial activism - particularly in the supernational sphere
the development bank that was promised a few years ago.

Will the stuff we get through the letterbox this time be telling us if there's anything good about you and what useful things you've done, or just the usual sh*t slinging and pointing out what everyone else has done wrong?

I have decided it will be better to evaluate the thread responses at my advanced age as one of the resident forum sages, but already. I sense a trend that reveals certain forum members political affiliations in this thread that has been reflected in the phraseology of their postings on other matters over the last months.

I would say they were more or less on par with what I expected, bar the replacement of trident, which I had not considered for quite some time.

It was also interesting to see more being asked about press regulation.

Thanks to everyone has posted a reply. It will be useful to re-visit this thread whenever I need to test my working knowledge of policy.

We never get canvassers where I live, it is staunchly Labour round here that Labour do not need to canvas for votes, the Tories and Lib Dems don't bother because they know they have a snowballs chance in hell of being elected, I live in one of Labours safest seats in the Country, in all the time I have been eligible to vote, I have never seen a canvasser on my doorstep. Intact it is that safe, I could put my dog up for Labours candidate here and she would be voted in

But if a canvasser knocked on my door I would be wanting to know things like there stance on Europe, 'Do you support union with the EU, if so, if we voted to stay in a referendum to stay in the EU, should we sign up to Schengen'

What will you do for people with disabilities, moreso mental health problems

I would also be interested in where they stand on a local level

My main concerns/questions would be:

- Defence of the Realm (and what they would intend to do with an armed forces that its constantly being reduced in size and capability, yet more is asked of the on a daily basis).
- Legal Reform
- Our relationship with the Europe Union
- Tax evasion (on both a personal and corporate level)
- Immigration
