I stood to lose several hundred pounds worth of holiday if this strike had gone ahead, but rather than blaming everybody simply waited until the ACAS talks took place. As at all times there are two sides to every story, both parties no doubt felt they held the moral upper ground. Just thankful that some middle ground has been found. Democracy at work.

Bear in mind the deal hasn't been agreed yet. There still could be a strike if the union members don't agree to the deal. There just won't be one next week.

I do understand stand the points made however we are continually told on here to prempt the possible downfalls of the rail industry ( turn up really early, build several hours in to your plans for cover delays etc).

So when it looks like our plans are screwed we can't always hang in to until the last minute to make changes.

1) others are waiting on our plans
2) The longer you leave it the harder it is to make re arrangements due to availability
3) the costlier these changes make.

So please remember there are other important things outside of your world that are just as important to other people in their world.

Hmmm, I'm sure the rmt is very sorry it may have inconvenienced you whilst tryin to protect its members best interests. In future perhaps send them your travel plans in advance so that they can ensure they work any industrial disputes around you...or perhaps simpler still, they should go through with the strike regardless just to ensure they don't upset you.

Well maybe you should be sorry to a certain extent then maybe you would get more sympathy. You often display a disregard for your customers, good to see you are consistent if anything.

Yes I can see your sarcasm but I can also see it is still a barb comment to the unconvinced many.

They shouldn't use the threat of action as a tool to talk. They should negotiate with a non public threat and if ignored call the strike and see it through.

No problem with striking per se but this posturing is pathetic.

What are you on about?!

They havnt used a strike as a threat-they were most certainly planning to see it through. They held plenty of talks and negotiations in private which had no effect on the travelling public but they failed to reach an acceptable conclusion to the workforce so they decided that enough was enough and to hold a ballot. That made NR re-enter talks and they have now reached a satisfactory deal it seems. Why on earth would they now 'see it through' considering it would just cause pointless disruption with absolutely no one getting anything out of it? They would loose pay and the public face chaos.

It wasn't an empty threat as you seem to imply-they would have seen it through if no deal had been reached.

I'm quite clear on what I am "on about" thank you.

Have a private negotiation.

Call a private ballot

Get a majority ok to strike.

Privately state a date for a strike if you don't get movement with a deadline.

If the deadline is reached and no movement is gained then announce the strike to the public and get on with it and do it.

Quite simple.

What? You don't have a clue what you are on about! Have you any idea about strike laws for a start?! What you suggest is illegal for starters. The strike dates need to be announced in advance as does the ballot and result. It can't all be done in private.

And anyway, are you honestly saying you would have prefered this to remain secret and then Sunday night announced no trains on Monday and Tuesday rather than people having over a week to plan for it?!

They have had private negotiations but they failed.

A private ballot isn't legal or possible.

They got a majority to strike-a huge majority.

They can't privately set a strike date-they legally must inform the employer.

They announced the strike and got on with it. But as last minute talks were successful they called off action as it BENIFITS no one at all.

I'm not sure you have a clue what you are on about to be honest-you seem very confused by what has actually happened here and general industrial action legislation...

I may not know all the rules but I didn't suggest they announce it on Sunday, that's just ridiculous.

When I said private I mean between the two parties with a buffer between decision day for the management and the actual date.

I know exactly what happened, I suspect you are treating me like a numpty.

I'm very used to the art of negotiations and what I think is that the process show utter contempt for the customer, something that is avoidable but seems to be low down on the agenda of the current method. Something I could get away with but is readily available in the tool bag of the railway MO.

Um, very little of that makes sense. Perhaps take a step back and read up on this kind of thing before posting as you are digging yourself into a hole!

Your first paragraph sums it up as clearly you don't know all the rules, or any of them Apparently! Your suggestions were illegal so a union could not go down that route.

Your suggestion about setting a deadline is impractical and a waste of time for everyone involved including passengers. So say they said they would strike Monday week if talks didn't reach an agreement by this Friday? Then talks fail and they set for the strike. So you are honestly suggesting that they then suspend all talks for a week until the strike is over? Rather than everyone get back round the table and try to resolve the dispute rather than cause disruption etc?!

You either havnt thought this through at all or are on the wind up as your last few posts are flawed and are getting even more flawed...!

If you don't understand industrial action legislation then please read up on them or ask questions rather than make posts suggesting you know things which you clearly don't, your last few posts on here are just making you look very silly I'm afraid!

Did you not take out holiday insurance?

ELL Panel 1 and 2 are based in the OBC at New Cross Gate depot. They cover from NXG, New Cross, Silwood and from Old Kent Road Junction up to Highbury & Islington. Carillion cover maintenance on the TfL owned infrastructure.

My mistake. Still not NR signallers though, are they?

If I do make mistakes I'm just so grateful I've got you to patronise me and call me very silly repeatedly. You keep mentioning the rules but not actually stating the "rule". No wonder non e knows as it seems to be a secret code.

From my angle and the hassle I've been through it all makes perfect sense, but you clearly don't give a monkeys about the inconvenience of millions. So you stick to your little rule book and don't change. Keep everything rolling on because these are the rules.

They've been negotiating this for nearly a year. The 3 previous offers have been WELL below what we expect (and we didn't expect much). As we didn't agree with what they offered us, this put us in dispute with the company. We then balloted for a strike as the union didn't feel we was getting anywhere with the company. Trust me, we was willing to go out Monday.

The strike option should be the last one. And not used as a "threat" as that will eventually water it down. It should be used as a full & final option, to get the company to prick. their ears and actually listen.

I don't agree with striking over pay, but as said umpteen times this isn't just about pay and there is a lot more at stake. Plus, the company have been playing hard to get. An overtime ban would of done nicely.

Outcome was as predicted and follows the pattern of LU strikes - travelling public has to reschedule travel arrangements, businesses have to reorganise meetings and at the last minute strike is called off.

Trains may be emptier than normal on Tuesday on the long distance routes into London.

Well you need to be less arrogant in your posts and if not sure on something ask rather than make a statement and get defensive when someone who knows what they are on about corrects you.

I see where you are coming from with your suggestion but it shows q total lack of understanding and I explained why it would not work. You then became very aggressive and rather than ask continued to make these suggestions which are illegal and impractical and claimed you DID know what you were on about despite the fact you were very, very wrong.

Ask if you are unsure, then you won't look as silly when people correct you.

Well maybe you need to look at your matter of fact smugness to see why you get such reactions.

You still have not quoted any rule and the reasoning for the rule so it can be examined.

I saw a guy wearing a Network Rail ID card standing on the platform, I told him to put it away before he gets beaten up by irate commuters.

That's bang out of order. Utterly ridiculous. Most people are far more sensible than that

Say that after working in the uniform of a rail operator (nothing to do with it's operations directly) when delays start closing stations...

Some commuters really do like to voice their opinions rather loudly or physically, and this wasn't even strike action causing it.

OK, but the way GodAtum writes it comes across more as a threat than friendly advice. (especially given he's been one of those complaining)

Do your own reasearch. Secret ballots and in announced strike dates are illegal.

Most people might be. But a sizeable proportion aren't unfortunately. I have been given "advice" about the rights and wrongs of going on strike in the last few days and thats because I was wearing a TOC uniform. Doesn't seem to matter to some. All they see is "railway" so it must be my fault

Well I must say that is a very clever idea apart from one minor problem. It is illegal. Go away and have a look at the legislation dealing with industrial action and then come back.

Try looking here to start with: Employment Relations Act 2004

I was working at customer services at shepherds bush overground during the last bus strike wearing a London buses uniform generally the public were quite polite. Although some didn't understand that because I was working that day that meant I was not on strike.

You'd think johngill100 would know this, given Maggie T brought the initial legislation in

I found this link http://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/SN00596/SN00596.pdf

Which lists the affects of the various changes. I can't find anything that says my suggested process is illegal.

Happy to shown I've missed it!
