They could be either the older JZ 661 (GM G16) powered by a Roots-blown 16-567C, or the later JZ 664 (GM G26) powered by a Roots-blown 16-645E

This is a 661 (that Roots-blown 16-567 sound is just so distinctive...) :

...and these are 664s:

I'm not usually someone who goes for "the thrash", but goodness me - the noise in that second video!

It's interesting just how different the sound of the non-turbo/Roots-blown EMD engines and the turbocharged versions is. The turbo versions (with different exhaust plumbing to send all the exhaust through the single turbo, instead of direct to 2 or 4 exhaust stacks on the roof) lose all the raucousness, so you end up with a loud humming & roaring noise overlaid with turbo 'scream' at full power. Compare the sound in videos of SD38-2/GP38-2 (non-turbo 16-645) and SD40-2/GP40-2 (turbo 16-645) if you're interested.

Bad/off beer?
I usually find that the tenth pint must’ve had something wrong with it too @ac6000cw:lol:

I'd only had a couple of pints - and the stomach pains lasted all of the next day - standing by an open window in the front coach listening to the cl.40 took my mind off it... :)

Well, being hauled by a 40 over the northern WCML was some compensation for having been ill for half the night before the trip due to bad/off beer - I think I avoided that particular pub thereafter...
I'd say that it had more to do with the amount of 'al-key-hol' (to quote Marge Simpson) you drank as opposed to it's quality. ;)

Instantly reminded of the CIE 121s (and the later 141s by extension) by that (linked vid from the SouthernYard YT channel):

Yes, (AFAIK) the Irish 121 & 141 were (originally) powered by 8-567C and the 181s by 8-645E engines.

Having experienced 141 and/or 181s 'in the metal' I can vouch for them having the correct EMD Roots-blown sound :D

Indeed, that sounds about right. :)

Yeah. Not having experienced any EMD 567s at full cry (or at all, let alone with Roots blowers), it's amazing how distinctive a sound it is. Also, speaking as a Brit, it's pretty darn odd hearing the Mk3 self-leveling valve squeal alongside a pair of Roots-blown EMD 567s lol

In my mind however, the best-sounding EMD prime mover is the 12-645E3C with a mechanically-assisted turbocharger. Major bonus points if that turbocharger is a wailer/screamer (linked vid from The Irish Mainline YT channel)!

Nah...why would you want a mere 12 cylinders and a short train when you can have 64 pushing a long one instead? ;)

(the good bit is 1:30 onwards - it was definitely worth standing in the rain for :))

Guess I'm just a sucker for screaming turbochargers. ;) 071s do sound amazing at Notch 8 (linked vid from the Metro Vick YT channel).

With that in mind, there's something to be said about 4 SD40-2s at full bore, truly earth-shaking (linked vid from the supertouring YT channel). Apt, since there's a ex-Conrail unit in your lashup there. ;)

I do like the GM stuff but my go to place will always be what I grew up with.
Back in the day it was mainly Sulzer stuff, but I could always be tempted with EE even though I knew it was like having an affair…

Despite not growing up around them or any mainline diesel loco type (makes one wonder why I'm even contributing to this thread, doesn't it? lol), EE will always be my go-to diesel brand as they appeal to me on so many levels. That said, I hold a strong appreciation for the other major players (Sulzer, Paxman, Maybach, GM/EMD, GE, Alco etc).
