ED's on the Wilesden Relief

Hi all. On my many trips past the Willesden Relief lines, I'm often seeing a train of what look like scrap wagons, sometimes with a pair of ED's (one in rail blue!!) on the front, and sometimes not. Anyone shed any light on what, why and so on??

They work some kind of Crossrail spoil train to a disposal point in southern land somewhere. I think it is a GBRF job.

As an aside the cross rail spoil train to Forders, worked by DBS, seems to have dies a death

I've not seen a freight at Forders for about, ooh, 2 months now.

Well, not the once a fortnight or so that I work a Bedford diagram.

It has been longer than that i think.

The ED job seems to be fairly regular judging by pictures i have seen.

Is it booked for a pair of ED's then?? Also seen a 56 on what looks like the same train. Hard to tell when you go by at 80ish!!!

The train in question I believe transports spoil from Crossrail site (s) down to Northfleet in Kent. The spoil is being used to create a nature reserve of some description I do believe. The 73's are used due to the lack of available 66's in GBRF's fleet.

The train you are referring to ran from daily from Willesden to Northfleet,
but it ceased operation a month or so ago, with all CrossRail spoil from
Willesden now going to Calvert instead, although there are still trains
from Westbourne Park (Paddington) to Northfleet, although those are
strictly 66-hauled.

The class 73s which used to work the Willesden spoil train now operate
a semi-regular Hoo Junction to Cricklewood engineers train, which runs
up to four mornings a week.
