Waverley can be quite good, and I've never had any trouble there myself.
If you go to Princes Street Gardens, to the west of Waverley, there's a f
ootbridge over the railway and nearby there's a
path with a wall right up against it.
Just to the east of the station there are some
steps just off Regent Road which can be good as well.
Further east you can sometimes get good photos from the western end of
Fishwives Causeway, and if you go a bit further east from there, there is a
footbridge over the railway which can also be quite good.
To the south west, I quite like
Kingsknowe Station, which has the advantage of an AHB crossing at one end so you know when something's coming.
To the north west, there is an area
by the end of the runway at Edinburgh Airport, which I particularly like.
If you're willing to go a bit outside the city, I find
Wallyford Station to be good. If you're not in a car, the North Berwick stoppers call there, or you can get a Lothain 44 or 44A which pass through Wallyford.
In terms of what you'll see;
- Just west of Waverley you'll mostly see 156s, 158s and 170s, as well as the TPE 185s, Virgin and XC Voyagers, and some HSTs IIRC.
I think you still get the odd 225 passing as well.
- At Kingsknowe, you get 156s, I think it's four 322s a day, Virgin 220s and 221s, HSTs and 225s (depending if they're still running to Glasgow)
- Edinburgh Airport, you get 158s and 170s, with 3 HSTs and XC Voyagers each way per day.
- Fishwives Causeway you'll get 158s, 170s, 322s, Voyagers, HSTs and 225s.
- Wallyford you get 322s, Voyagers, HSTs and 225s.
That's the main ones I can think of just now, might think of more later on though.
