going to be heading from edinburgh, to york on the 31st january, then onto birmingham the next day. I want to avoid using crosscountry, and will split the journey if needed. just wanted to know what the best prices, or a different routes. cheers.

Do you want to totally avoid Xc? Which would mean you can't use peterbourgh - liecester and derby - birmingham? Or just Voyagers.

If it is the totally avoid XC and you have lots of time you will need to take TPE to Manchester. Northern, Virgin or ATW to Crewe and then LM or Virgin to Birmingham.

I you want to avoid Voyagers rather than XC, perhaps you would be OK with one of their HSTs. 06:32 from York and 2 later journeys (that start in Scotland) will provide HST rides to BHM.

Surely you're just spiting yourself in trying to avoid XC when travelling across the country from York to Birmingham? Using National Rail, avoiding XC adds an extra hour and twenty minutes and two changes. You can cut that to one change if you're OK with XC Turbostars, but that adds even more time and nearly two sat on a Turbostar. Haven't even considered fares

Or the ones around 0830 and 1030 if you don't want to get up so early. Otherwise many options but the most straight forward is east coast to Peterborough and XC from here on a turbo.

Edinburgh - York depart 0800 price £8.00 single

From York, you have various options, such as TransPennine Express to Warrington Central, (walk through Warrington, you could grab a bite to eat from a shop on your way), Warrington Bank Quay to Birmingham on Virgin.

You could change at Manchester for a Northern train to Crewe, then Crewe to Birmingham on London Midland.

You dould take East Coast to Peterborough, then XC 170 from there to Birmingham.

But what I'd recommend, is taking an East Coast service to Doncaster, a TPE 185 to Sheffield, then a HST to Derby, and a XC 170 from there to Birmingham. If you want walk-on tickets, get a ticket to Sheffield, then a Wayfarer (York station are happy to sell this), then a Burton upon Trent to Birmingham. If you can book in advance, you can get a XC Single from York to Sheffield for £7 and there is always good availability on that route.

If you want to take Northern from York to Sheffield, take the 11:01 via Pontefract Baghill. (York - Moorthorpe £9.60 + Moorthorpe - Sheffield £4.00 is the cheapest split for walk-on single tickets from York to Sheffield on trains that call at Moorthorpe).
