Edinburgh Waverley Redevelopment

Listening to the radio on my way home today I heard that there are plans to redevelop Edinburgh Waverley
I didn't pick up everything they said (I was at a rather complicated junction at the time ) but what I did hear is that the main thing is the replacement of all the glass in the roof, and something about better access to the station and the platforms.
I think there was something mentioned about upgrading the platforms, but i'm not sure what this will involve.
If it goes ahead, it should be finished by 2014, and it's said that it will have little effect on travellers whilst the work's being done.

Anyone know any more about this?

The BBC seem to know more. Hope that helps. Sounds like nothing too drastic, but nonetheless much needed. And, of course, with increasing electrification for central Scotland planned, keeping the roof clean will become easier

The one thing that strikes me is that they're saying that they'll remove 'redundant high level walkways'.
I hope they don't mean the one right across the middle of the station. It's far from redundant because it's used as a pathway across from Princes Street to Market Street.

The illustration seems to indicate that'll remain- having said that, barring some slightly convulted journies, there's few foot routes that would be made much longer by going across Waverly bridge instead. But it would be a shame for it to go, nontheless.

Next time you are on that walkway, look above you. there's what appears to be another walkway directly above it.

I'm sure there used to be a doorway marked "Hotel" when I was young just by the entrance to the main ticket hall. For years it was turned backwards but still illuminated. I think that took you up to the second walkway and into a basement entrance of the then "North British Hotel"

On the other hand it might just be my imagination.

The Calton Road Entrance was also the start of ANOTHER walkway across the Eastern side of Waverley. You can see where it emerged onto Jeffrey Street. I've no idea if there were any staircases down to the platforms or not, as the walkway had long gone by Summer 1974.

Next time you are on that walkway, look above you. there's what appears to be another walkway directly above it.

I'm sure I'll have seen it, just never really noticed.

One I have thought of is the footbridge just next to the escalwators up onto the main one, which is closed to the public, I think it leads up to an office for something, but you can't see much.

It also blocks the view of trains in platform 19 and 20 from the walkway.

When I was there for the TG race, I noticed it for the first time:



I'd seen it a couple of times before, but never really thought anything of it.

That picture is of the temporary structure built during all the rebuilding of the current bridge over P19/20 I think.

There is now a campaign to have the old high level walkway from Calton St to Jeffrey St reopened.

Oops... Yes I see now... ah well.


In fact with the new 'clear roof' at Waverley, several walkways could be added across the roof to avoid the us and them scenario which has exoisted since the Nor Loch existed way back in the 13th Century.

(For those who don't know, the Nor Loch was the lake which occupied the Princes St Gardens and Waverly area and which was drained in the 19th Century to allow building of the station and railway. )

It was also an artificial loch, it was originally a swamp after the ice age

Flooded in 1460, Drained in 1759, filled in in the 19th Century... I was trying to recall my trip to Mary King's close in 2003!
