Edinburgh to Leeds return

First time on this sub-forum - Please may I ask the following:

I occasionally have to do the above journey as a day trip for business, needing to be in Leeds before 10am. I normally get either a direct XC HST or an LNER, changing at York for TPE, both ways.

On my next trip I will have to do the same outbound but I wondered whether I could return via the Settle & Carlisle, on the same return ticket? My guess would be no, but I thought I should ask.

If not - what would be the correct single ticket(s) for the return journey? Leeds to Carlisle and then Carlisle to Edinburgh?

Edinburgh to Leeds is definitely permissible via the Settle & Carlisle line - not only is it one of the numerous mapped routes for this journey (being permitted by map GY), but it is in fact the shortest possible route from Edinburgh to Leeds, at 214 miles and 22 chains, as compared to 230 miles and 19 chains along the "conventional" East Coast Main Line route via Berwick-upon-Tweed and York. This makes it doubly valid!

Note - there are definitely cheaper tickets available for this journey than a pure walk-up Edinburgh to Leeds return. But if you are looking to have total flexibility and a minimum of complexity and the like then an Edinburgh to Leeds ticket will suffice.

On most journey planner web-sites, you can enter a "via" station, which is useful if you want to verify that a ticket is valid via a given route. For example, you could try searching for Edinburgh to Leeds, and then do the search again putting in via Appleby and see if the same ticket is offered. The problem with most web-sites is if you put in a via station, it will route both outward and return journeys that way. However, there are some where you can specify different routes for out and return journeys, such as Trainsplit if you select the Advanced options. If you want to return via the S&C, you will need to put via somewhere north of Settle, to avoid the route via Lancaster.

the linked map has a big hole where the S&C should be. I've tried doing leeds Edinburgh on national rail and have never managed to get an itinerary.

edit, just tried national rail with via appleby and got an itinerary straight off the bat. so there you go...
