You'll almost certainly get a seat, either because most services particularly at this time of year are not running anything close to full OR because staff infrequently put the reservation tickets out, therefore resulting in no reservations anyway.Hi Folks - Hoping on an HST with the offspring tomorrow. As I have two of them I'd like to have as little messing about getting a seat as possible?
Can I ask which coach is *generally* unreserved standard please?

I believe D is usually unreserved or mostly unreserved. Anytime I've bought advances, reservations have been in mostly B or rarely C. Never D.
Handily D also has a toilet.

Most Anerdeen services from Glasgow today are planned for 4 car HSTs. Except the 1040 that is a 170. The first two Inverness also 170s.
Rugby at Edinburgh today so provably 158s beingu used tor extra coaches on 170 services to there.

Probably a bit late to say this, but if its a 2+5 set, Coach E won't have reservations in it as they can't guarantee a specific service will have one.
For the uninitiated like me, can you point me to the link where you see this info? Up in Pitlochry soon and would like to have my first ever experience of a HST, maybe up to Inverness and back.

Either look at RealTimeTrains for allocations or sign up to HSTGen where daily allocations are posted for GWR and XC as well as ScotRail.
When I have used Scotrail HSTs they have put all the reservations in one coach.
