Edinburgh to Bristol single on 12/9/10

Hi all,

Hopefully some of you more knowledgeable people can help & suggest or find the cheapest ticket on this day. Standard advance single is £58.00 but can i get cheaper by splitting the tickets ? I dont have any knowledge of the best way so any help gratefully received.

It looks like part of the East Coast Main Line is closed that day so there will be extra pressure on advance fares as you've seen.

An idea:

Transpennine Express Edinburgh to Preston (approx. £12 advance)
Virgin Preston to Birmingham (approx. £15 advance)
Cross Country Birmingham to Bristol, splitting tickets at Cheltenham but staying on the same train. (approx. £15 in total advance)

That's 4 separate advance fares that you can currently get for £41.50 in total in a rough check I just did. Seems fairly reasonable given the ECML closure I suppose.

Edinburgh-Birmingham is cheap on XC, £16.50 (to compete with Virgin). However on this date there are engineering works and the service is a bus to Newcastle. The £16.50 fares are available if you don't mind a very, very slow journey!

Otherwise, you can try splitting at places like Preston, Manchester, Wolverhampton, Birmingham.

For example you may find a cheap TPE fare to Manchester, then XC onwards to Bristol. Such fares would not show up when looking for Edinburgh to Bristol direct.

I'd definately recommmend flying, far better than a journey on a Cross Country Voyager (and bus by the looks of it)

The £16.50 fare is available almost every day by XC between Birmingham & Edinburgh, route Newcastle, (and return) - usually with just 24hours notice.

No matter how often I search, have yet to manage to get below £37ish for a single fare between Birmingham & Scotland on Virgin

Thanks all for the great info, we are flying up for the weekend but exploring the different option of using the train on the way back, for a bit of a change & providing it is not massively too expensive. Seems like it can be done at good cost & thanks again for the info !
