Hello all,

I'm new to this journey splitting thing so would appreciate some help from some kind soul who knows their way about this sort of thing! I'm trying to find the cheapest fare for two journeys as follows:

Edinburgh to Banbury - July 22nd (Leaving Edinburgh in the morning)
Oxford to Edinburgh - July 27th or 28th (Not fussed about leaving time, hopefully around lunchtime!)

I have a railcard so that should help prices a little!

Going to be a tough one. Friday 22nd is the first day of the school holidays for many in England - so bargain fares are few and far between.

On this occasion, if you can manage it... Probably just as well going for the convenience of the flexibility and buying a railcard return to Oxford. It'll cost you just shy of £80.

'Splitting' the journey into a combination of tickets may help, but it may not. For such a long distance journey as this, it's less likely, especially if you are avoiding London.

An Edinburgh <> Oxford Off Peak Return avoiding London costs £79-60 with a Railcard and is valid on any train at or after 05:00. If you split, then an Off Peak Return to places like Birmingham are going to be restricted, most likely not being valid until 09:30.

I suggest you use one of the WebTIS-based sites such as RedSpottedHanky, East Coast or Southern, find an itinerary you like, and then click on the details for the trains, and it will tell you the calling points. You can try "splitting" at each of these calling points. There are hundreds or possibly thousands of possibilities, so obviously you'll have to limit yourself to just a few obvious "splits", to see if you're onto something. This can be time consuming, so good luck!

If you get stuck, just ask.

Have you looked at Advance tickets for specific booked trains? It may be too late now, especially for the 22nd, as the trains will be particularly busy.
