Edinburgh to Aberdeen train only going as far as Dundee

Next Saturday my wife and I are making a journey to Inverness, from Edinburgh via Aberdeen.

Our journey is as follows

14:31 Edinburgh to Aberdeen on LNER arriving at 17:06

17:25 Aberdeen to Inverness on ScotRail arriving at 19:39

Just talking about the trip today, with some excitement I was saying we would be on the Aberdeen train in a weeks time. But then I notice that Aberdeen train today is only going as far as Dundee.

What would happen next week if our planned train also stopped short at Dundee .. we don’t really want to be stuck in Dundee or even Aberdeen, as our hotel booking is in Inverness.

What would happen next week if our planned train also stopped short at Dundee .. we don’t really want to be stuck in Dundee or even Aberdeen, as our hotel booking is in Inverness.

LNER tend to provide road transport rather than arrange acceptance with Scotrail.

However, the simplest solution would be for LNER to arrange for you to transfer to the Inverness train at Dundee (it is a through train from Glasgow).

As it happens I was on one of these trains today (the one departing Waverley at 1027) and it was announced that passengers going north of Dundee should just wait for the next Scotrail train there and tickets would be valid.

I assume road transport would be needed if both the LNER and Scotrail trains are predicted to be full and standing, as the Scotrail train could not then accommodate an extra trainload of LNER passengers.

But in the worst case where Scotrail will not accept an LNER advance ticket, as long as it's physically possible to board the Scotrail train you would just get on and buy a new ticket if you didn't want to be stranded.

What ticket(s) do/will you have?

If you have a bought a through ticket from Edinburgh to Inverness with that itinerary, then it should be valid on both LNER and Scotrail, so in the case of your booked train being cancelled or terminate short you should be able to pick up any LNER or Scotrail trains along your route.

If you have a LNER only ticket to inverness then your position is potentially weaker. As I understand it, LNER have a responsibility to get you to your destination, but Scotrail only have a mandate to assist if you would otherwise be stranded overnight. LNER do have an obligation to "re-route" you if you would otherwise be delayed by an hour, but in practice this can be difficult to excercise in practice.

Advance single tickets .. Edinburgh - Aberdeen, then Aberdeen to Inverness

I saw on one of the 'train apps' yesterday there was a bus from Dundee to Aberdeen ... would this have been arranged by LNER
