There is much going on in the Waverley and it generally looks good. New glazing etc. Similarly the new Haymarket is much improved

Its just such a shame the easy stuff like routine cleaning is neglected. Glass in particular

The glass canopies over the platforms at Haymarket are green and dirty. If your going to use glass in buildings it needs cleaning.

Waverley steps. The glass and steelwork is filthy. Grime and scum and stoor. The flagship station entrance. Neglect gives a bad impression to all visitors.

Network rail responsibility? Raise your game guys.

This is very much a UK disease, and it annoys me as well. Reading similarly has been designed with lots of visible muck accumulation places, and accumulating it is.

Mind you, in a country where you see hotel room bathrooms with thick built up muck on the extractor fan grille, which is easily wiped off with a cloth in half a second, I just give up sometimes. SWT's Desiros similarly had built up filth all over the aircon vents (SWR seem to have cleaned it off), same with a lot of Electrostars. It's just lazy and poor design.

When they decided to put glazing over Waverley steps you would have thought that how to keep it clean would have been taking into consideration. I think the reason it is not kept clean is because it is quite difficult to do so.

Haymarket is much much better nowadays despite the grime on the canopies. I’d say it’s a fairly welcoming station, after previously being one of the most grim on the ScotRail network.

The grime at Waverley is certainly noticeable but I can’t help but feel it wouldn’t make a difference to how welcoming the station was. It has been a never-ending construction site for years and comes across as fairly run-down at certain platforms.

Ironically, Gateway has the most lavish facilites at present, despite barely being used. I’ve never noticed any grime there when my train stops on the way to Inverness.

Not only accumulating muck, but many places (at Reading) are inaccessible with normal day to day equipment, even if anyone actually felt responsible for any cleaning. Massive spaces that will always require heavy duty cherrypickers to do basic tasks.

Indeed, that is just poor design - a structure needs to be designed so that there are no visible muck accumulation places that are not accessible using day to day tooling without the OHLE being isolated. Or there has to be the will to spend the money on the access equipment to give it a regular clean.

Nothing wrong with massive spaces, but for instance if you paint the tubular structure grey or black rather than white the muck won't be as visible. A simple and effective design change.
