What ticket would be best for a quick visit to Stirling and Perth, from a base in Edinburgh Park ?

(alternative option .. form / to Edinburgh Haymarket)

2 adults, with senior railcards

Flexible times, so not advance 'certain time' trains

My wife and I like Edinburgh, so will be visiting again towards the end of the year, but we fancy a quick visit to Stirling or Perth, or maybe both in one day.

Both on the same day? Day return from Edinburgh Park to Perth is £14.90 each with senior railcard. Your Perth leg is valid via Haymarket to give you more options, and the other leg from Edinburgh Park to Stirling (on the Dunblane) and then on to Perth.

When you say "Edinburgh Park", it depends if you are referring to the overall area or the station.

Depending on your fitness Edinburgh Gateway station is either a short walk (down the side of Morrisons) or tram ride away.

So you could, do Edinburgh Park - Stirling - Perth - Edinburgh Gateway, or vice versa.

Someone else will be able to let you know which ticket to buy for that journey (suspect it'd be a Haymarket to Perth ticket).

OP here, thanks for the replies

I haven't booked the hotel yet, hence my two options.

It'll either be the Premier Inn Hub hotel at Haymarket, where we have been a few times now, or the Edinburgh Park 'Airport' Premier Inn, where we have never been.

I see there's a train to Perth via Stirling, so with 'flexible' tickets could we get off at Stirling for a short while, then later carry on to Perth

I would have thought there was more to do and see in Stirling than Perth! Also accommodation costs are usually more reasonable too. Stirling is quite compact, but a visit to Causewayhead for the Wallace Monument and view the distant castle, then to the Castle itself (to view the monument). Perth’s ‘Stone of Destiny’ exhibit is currently closed.

As long as you avoid the Edinburgh to Perth advance tickets, then yes you can.

+1 for Stirling Castle - there's a lot to see there.

Stirling a lot more to do than Perth. Stirling Castle, Bannockburn, Wallace Monument, Stirling Bridge.
Get a bus to Cannock and the Wallace Monument.
Perth the Black Watch Museum. Not sure what else

Off the top of my head, in Perth and nearby you have:

Perth Museum (recently re-opened and has an exhibit of the 'Stone of Destiny')
Perth Art Gallery
Rodney Gardens at the North end of Bellwood Park
Branklyn Gardens (National Trust for Scotland property)
Scone Palace (easily reachable by frequent local bus)

The top three are free, except for special exhibitions in the museum. The latter two charge an entry fee.

Regarding the accommodation, for our chosen dates it would only be £7 less if we stayed 3 nights in Stirling P.I. rather than 3 at Edinburgh Park P.I. or £13 less compared to the Haymarket Hub.

My wife and I like to be based somewhere and perhaps take a train trip for a day away.

Previously we had the following day trips and received good advice about tickets on this forum ..

Dundee, from Edinburgh
Llandudno from Liverpool
Bath from Cardiff

It looks as if Strirling is the better place, so we may just visit there.
