Edinburgh - London Ticket Splitting

Hi Guys,

I'm travelling from Edinburgh to London tomorrow, well I could actually travel from Inverkething but I don't think the price flows are much different, anyway, the PRIV fare on the wayup was £36 which I thought was a bit steep to be honest.

I will have PRIV on the way down as well and don't mind changing or going a strange route if there is a cheaper way of doing it. Does anyone know?

I doubt you'll get it much lower. I wish I could do it for £36! If you are doing a day return (I assume not) a combination of Anytime Day tickets may help, but otherwise I think splitting won't work.

- Thanks, I know I'm lucky to get it cheap anyway, sometimes you can just end up with a more varied route for a bit cheaper so thought I'd see.

Splitting at Doncaster and/or Berwick can often help. There were some £11 tix for tomorrow between Edinburgh & Donny. Won't be so cheap between Donny and London tho'.

Single fares:

Edinburgh-Newcastle (with option to split at Berwick)

EDB-BWK £4.70 (Any Permitted) or £3.15 (XC Only)
BWK-NCL £4.75 (Any Permitted) or £3.70 (XC Only)

versus

EDB-NCL £10.50 (Any Permitted) or £6.50 (XC Only)

So between Edinburgh and Newcastle it's cheaper to split unless you're on XC.

Then from Newcastle to Doncaster (with option to split at York)

NCL-YRK £6.60 (Any Permitted) or £5.50 (XC Only)
YRK-DON £2.90 (Any Permitted)

versus

NCL-DON £10.90 (Any Permitted) or £8.15 (XC Only)

So, again, cheaper to split unless you're on XC.

The cheapest you can get as far as Donny for is £18.95 for the Any Permitted. A saving of £1.05 over the through Edinburgh-Donny fare. The saving is small but it would be roughly 4 times higher for non-PRIV holders though.

However it's best to simply get a through fare on XC, this is £11.15 from Edinburgh to Doncaster.

From Doncaster to London


From Doncaster, the cheapest through fare is £14.90 Hull Trains Only, according to Avantix this is showing as a walk-on SOS fare with PRIV discount (can anyone with FRPP access confirm?)

So it can be done for £26.05 on rattling mid-range DMUs masquerading as InterCity trains! If I had a PRIV I'd pay £33.90 for the through ticket and go on a real train though.
