Edinburgh-London 24-25/3

Hi all,

Bit of a long shot I know but thought I'd try...

I'm looking for a better value fare than the £135.50 Super Off-Peak return for:

Edinburgh - London round trip. Must arrive in London by 1800 on 24/3/16. Ideally depart at 0900 on 25/3/16. No railcard. Can be a bit flexible with the route and time, so long as I get to London by 1800, but no early morning or late evening departures.

The 25th is Good Friday so I think better value is unlikely but thought I'd try. Trainsplit.com has no splits.

have you got those dates right? The 24th is the Thursday, the 25th is Good Friday.

If you've got the dates wrong (ie it is the Friday night you want to be in London, not the Thursday) then there are some cheaper tickets. On the way south the cheapest relevant singles are still £66.50, there's some slightly cheaper options on the Saturday morning northbound.

But as you recognise, short notice booking for a holiday weekend on a route that's very busy at the holidays

Assuming you're talking Friday and Saturday, on the way out on the Friday the 1330 Virgin Trains East Coast departure has one first class advance left at £64.50 - might still be worth booking an advance if you want to treat yourself - but be quick!
This could be combined with a standard advance (£53 on the 0820 Saturday - you'd save just under twenty quid, or if thats too early £66.50 on the 0947, alternatively you could change at Preston on the 0833 for £62).

With regards to the return tickets above £60, I'd probably book a standard class online super off peak single for £67.75 to give extra flexibility... you would only save a couple of quid on the super off peak single but at least you'd get first class on the way out!

But you do need to clarify the dates.

The following itinerary might not be the OP's idea of fun, but:

Good Friday:

Edinburgh dep 1051
Crewe arr 1358
using £30 Advance

Crewe dep 1502 (or 1402 if very lucky)
Euston arr 1750 (or 1650)
using £39 offpeak return valid on London Midland only

Easter Saturday:

Euston dep 0946
Crewe arr 1226
using return portion of offpeak return

Crewe dep 1309
Edinburgh arr 1622
using £22 Advance

Total: £91 (i.e. a 33% saving but at a cost in journey length)

£34 one-way on Ryanair EDI-STN at lunchime on Thursday (or £19 at the crack of dawn). I'll leave someone else to advise on the best ticket for the Stansted Express - there's always easyBus!

I considered that! By the time you throw in the Stansted Express ticket, plus the tram to Edinburgh airport the saving is not so great vs the train. I'm going to something at the Shaw Theatre by the British Library on the night of the 24th so a train would be much better for me anyway.
