Edinburgh - London 14/04/11

Evening all,

I am travelling between Edinburgh and London on the 14th. Ideally I'd like to get the 08:00 out and 16:00 return on East Coast, but since the EC website seems to be down, or my internet doesn't like it today, I cannot check the online discounted fares (I am also a registered EC website user).

If the site is still working, can a registered user check to see what the discounted prices would be with a 16-25 railcard? From NRE I have £108.55 using advance singles so far, but I'd like to know if I can get it cheaper before I commit to buying them either way. I know advances this close to the date of travel are seldom guaranteed so I don't want to hang around too long!

East Coast was one of a number of sites affected by a national problem with train running data. According to Southeastern (who were also affected) it should be ok now. Certainly the live departure boards are now working and they weren't earlier.

Why do you want to pay £108 using Advances?

Super Off-Peak Return is £75.65 with a railcard and is valid into King's Cross after 1117 so you should be fine with the 0800 departure. Yes there are restrictions in the afternoon from King's X however from Euston there is none so can you not use the WCML and save yourself a bundle?

When I looked at NRE and trainline websites, those ticket options were not immediately obvious/available - I've always used EC's website. I'll look into that though, £75.65 sounds a lot better!

If the worst comes, using your railcard, you can always travel WCML into and out of Euston with Virgin and not be time-restricted.

I've dug deeper into Trainline.com and I can get a super off-peak return travelling to Euston, I can't find any EC trains after 18:30 (the end of the super off peak restriction) that go right up to Edinburgh, so looks like Euston is the only way with the super off-peak; 06:52 changing at Crewe, and flexible for trains on the return trip which is handy as I don't know when I'll be travelling back!

OK yes my mistake. Forgot that it was not priced by VT. In that case, a simple zero-excess (or 5p) to Glasgow Central - London Terminals Off Peak Return should suffice. This allows the route Glasgow - Edinburgh - Carlisle - WCML - London Euston.

Come to think about it, you can just buy the Glasgow Central - London Terminals Off Peak Return for £75.70 and start/terminate short at Edinburgh. On the inbound journey as long as you travel via Preston/Carlisle en-route to Edinburgh and don't go into Glasgow then you should be fine. (IGNORE this bit: giving out duff information. )

Anyway this should not affect the OP too much. Southbound the 0800 arrives into KGX at 1241. Northbound from KGX 1600 (EDB 2028) would be restricted however Euston has no restriction in the afternoon so the 1530, change at Preston, gets into Edinburgh at 2022. Alternatively the 1630 gets into Glasgow central at 2038. There might be opportunities to change earlier en-route however I cannot check for now as the system's down.
