Edinburgh - Glenrothes ticketing queries

Evening, hope the festive period has been kind to you all.

I'm doing some research ahead of a planned trip, but I've hit something of a sticking point.

I'm looking at Edinburgh to Glenrothes with Thornton fares, but all NRE seems to offer is a £10.25 anytime fare (I have a 16-25 railcard). Is this linked with the January fares rise in any way, as looking at BRfares there is a £6.20 off peak day return listed, along with the £10.10 anytime.

Also are these ticket(s) valid via both Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy (so I can complete the circle)?

Yes those tickets are the tickets to use if you want to do the full Circle. The old trick of buying to somewhere like Rosyth or Dalmeny and taking advantage of the direct train rule has been closed down.

I would check the times you're travelling as if you're looking to do the Loco hauled the Off-Peak tickets are barred at that time which could be why NRE isn't showing them.

What times are you thinking of travelling? Glenrothes tickets are valid via both routes.

You can get off at Aberdour, Dunfermline, and Dalmeny for a wee wander if you like.

Off-Peak tickets are barred for certain services from Edinburgh and Haymarket. Other stations do not have evening peak restrictions.

I was planning to use a service leaving Edinburgh (Waverley) sometime after 10am, returning early afternoon. NRE was still returning the anytime ticket for such a search.

I did notice the evening restrictions while checking BRFares, if I want a trip on one of the loco-hauled services come the evening I don't mind buying an anytime then. I am planning to prioritize photography of said services though.

An Off Peak Day Return (CDR) will be fine then. There are lots of interesting places a short walk from the various stations en route not least at either side of The Bridge. With an EDB - GLT ticket you can break your journey at any intermediate station.
