Edinburgh - Dunbar and back again - is this route learning?

Was looking up a family member's train and came across the oddity of 5Y10, an ECS service running this week from Edinburgh - Dunbar and back again in the middle of the afternoon. Is this route learning, and if not what on earth is it doing?

It may act as a route learning run, but I was always under the impression it was a long winded way of freeing up a platform at the east end of the station if there isn't the path for a full stopping service to run. It used to only go as far as Prestonpans up loop I'm sure.
