A friend of the family has to go to a funeral next week in Basingstoke. There will be four passengers travelling - no railcards. Cheapest fares please

Out: Thursday morning on 31/03

Rtn: Saturday 02/04

They are quite flexible but say after 08:00 leaving Edinburgh & mid morning leaving Basingstoke. The funeral is on the Friday.

I'd check myself but laptop is goosed. RailUKformums works ok though.

Cheers

Advance comes in at £100 each, via Kings Cross and Waterloo

Super Off Peak comes in at £132 each, changing at Wolverhampton
However the return journey will require bus between Carlisle and Edinburgh

4 x Super Off Peak Returns come to £528.00 - you may travel via London & ECML, no need to get the bus mentioned by rail-britain.

I thought splitting Edinburgh (EDB) to Peterborough (PBO) might be useful here, as it allows the group to use GroupSave, but it turns out slightly more expensive amazingly (£546.60).

I've been trying to make use of the better fares on the WCML (with LM at least), but the cost of getting to Birmingham makes it prohibitive. The following would save a bit but would take forever - I've not checked whether it would even be doable in a day.

Via Manchester and Stafford (STA):
EDB-MAN £254.40 Off-Peak Rtn (route:Carlisle)
MAN-STA £75.60 Off-Peak Rtn
STA-EUS £60.00 Off-Peak Rtn (Groupsave, LM Only)
WAT-BSK £53.80 Off-Peak Rtn (Groupsave)
Total: £443.80 - still fully flexible but it would take all day.

And before someone else says it... Megabus to London is available for a total of £112 (plus some booking fees), then £53.80 train to Basingstoke.
