Because they can? They advertise their Airlink as being limited stop with a 24 hour service, if you wanted one which simply charged normal fares the service 35 is for you.

That's strange, because when I asked the driver of the 100, he said that if I traveled on the 35 I would've had to have bought the £9 day ticket as well!

Because the service terminates at the airport. Blame BAA for that one. If you use service by First Scotland East 21A its cheaper because its a thought service.

So why doesn't TfL charge premium fares on their buses to Heathrow? (Which I believe is still under the same ownership as Edinburgh?)

It isn't. Edinburgh was sold off by BAA a number of years ago. Can't remember who its parent is but not BAA. (Which someone will probably say doesnt exist anymore either. I think heathrow is now known as Heathrow airport holdings.
As for the rip off. I have never like Edinburgh for that since the started charging £1 to drop off passengers to encourage public transport use. At the time there was non for many to the west of the airport. Even now it is a tram to Edinburgh Park then a train. (Not really much of an improvement on bus to Haymarket the train).
I guess first group don't think it is viable to detour bus routes such as the 38 to round the airport.
Contrast with heathrow and free buses within the airport zone and standard fares. They want people to use public transportation. Edinburgh just wants to extract money out of passengers.

First are trying with route 21A to begin with, to see whats what. No38 is currently under being propped by the two housing companies along its route but. To be fair the bad enough without having to go into the airport delaying it more.
Alot of people don't do what said, there get the Stagecoach 747 up to Ratio station and change over.

I think it's a shame that the 35 is about to be morphed into a Skylink route also, presumably this will fall victim to the 'Airport' tax too

The Heathrow bus services are for local people, generally, and so there isn't the premium. Look at what they charge on Heathrow Express, though. And also look at the extra Carousel charge from Bucks to Heathrow compared to Uxbridge.
Its the same in most places. Dublin's Airlink is 10 but the local buses are a quarter of the price. Newcastle's Metro put the airport in a premium zone.

Dublin Bus Airlink 747/757 to the CC is €6 online and €7 on bus for a Gemini double decker with bench seating, wifi and some seats removed for extra luggage.
First Aircoach 700 to the CC is €6 online and €7 on bus for a luxury coach with leather seats and wifi on all vehicles and plug and USB sockets on most and under coach storage.
However Bus 16/41 are half that price, but are a basic bus that stops everywhere and at peak time can be very slow, crowded and it's not guranteed that the bus will have room for luggage or luggage racks. But outside peak they're an excellent deal.

Given that Lothian run the trams in Edinburgh, including to the Airport, this must also be a factor in what the buses charge.

Lothian dont run the trams. Transport for Edinburgh runs the trams. Transport for Edinburgh only holds the shares holding for Edinburgh City council
I was told if you are travelling to or from Edinburgh airport and intend to use the Tram it is much cheaper to buy a ticket to / from Ingliston Park and ride. It is easy walking distance from the airport terminal and you save money, apparently.

TfE own 5824139 out of 6399139 shares in Lothian Buses (c.91%). Both companies have the same registered address.

The 100 charges £7.50 return or £9 including a day ticket on Lothian's normal services. I believe that the Glasgow bus charges £10 return including travel on First services in the city zone. Not much difference, unless of course you don't want anything apart from the airport journeys.
Edinburgh and Glasgow are both ripoffs compared with Manchester, with as far as I know no premium on bus or train. I'm a bit biassed mind, having caught out the boss man at Edinburgh in a lie when he was in charge of First Scotland East, or whatever it was called back then.
