Arrived a few months ago into what I now know is International Arrivals 1 at the airport after arriving at one of the low single digit gates. However, on previous occasions at these gates I've ended up on a bus down to the '2nd' international arrivals area. Has the int arrivals 1 always been there, or is it a new addition?

I could be wrong, so take what I'm saying with a pinch of salt:

I think International Arrivals 1 is the old international arrivals hall, but they tend to use the new International Arrivals 2 unless the airport is really busy or if there's a long haul flight arriving.

From what I remember, the problem at Edinburgh was the lack of space, so when they built the extension a few years ago, it included new international arrivals and domestic arrival halls, and then International Arrivals 1 (the old international arrivals) took over the old domestic arrivals area including baggage reclaim as part of a new expanded arrivals hall. I also have the feeling that Edinburgh was hoping to use International Arrivals 1 as a place for USA pre-clearance, so there was no benefit in removing it, especially as Edinburgh doesn't really need the capacity at that side of the airport.

But generally, there's a mess at Edinburgh with the amount of buses used. They really need to just build a proper underground arrivals corridor for international flights and allow domestic passengers to simply exit through the departures lounge, rather than the current situation where flights can arrive at certain gates and then passengers (even domestic) need to be bussed halfway across the airport.

I see international Arrivals 1 getting used intermittently and only during the day. Last time I arrived late at night on a Ryanair flight at the gate nearest to Arrivals 1 and we were bused around to arrivals 2.

This happened to me recently. I wasn't even aware there was another arrivals hall, and this is my local airport which I fly from frequently.

I felt really bad, because I was with a disabled family member who was very tired from all the walking involved (only convinced her at one point to use a wheelchair). I'd said don't worry, the arrivals is only a few minutes walk from the car park shuttle bus. Well, that turned out not to be true!

I arrived in EDI last last night and the old International arrivals area was open. So it does open late at night.

I work there - IA1 is the old arrivals hall, domestic arrivals used come down an escalator (‘no longer there) from the terminal and the belts could be accessed by anyone. Now you have hall 1 / hall 2 / domestic arrivals.

i believe what the plan is (they Are currently building new stands) is eventually the wall separating IA2 and domestics will be knocked down and this will become the international hall and IA1 will become the domestic arrivals hall… or so the saying goes. I love working there but it’s crazily over capacity and much needed.

IA1 is used a lot in the summer - and is also the common transit area hall so flights from Dublin/jersey etc use it

That wasn't exactly yesterday, from an era when the airport had a public viewing area where you could watch the runway and there was a 15minute free short-stay car park right next to the terminal.
