Edinbrugh to Exeter in August

I equired about this before but now have semi confirmed dates.

A friend is planning to come visit from Edinbrugh from the 2nd August to the 16th August. She wants a direct train to Exeter as she is not a good traveller (she doesn't want to fly either) - we want to keep the fare as low as possible (ideally £100 or less) - Searches on Southern have yeilded nothing less then a £150 Saver...

Can anyone advise better options?

There are advance tickets available - but they need to be split, even for travel on the same train.

Going out 13:25 to Birmingham, and from Birmingham to Edinburgh at 16:03 is £17.50 + £16.50.

Returning on the 15:07 to Birmingham and the 20:12 to Exeter is £16.50 + £17.50

Total £68.
Obviously, they are advance tickets, so only valid on those trains - and booking this way would mean possibly having to change seats at Birmingham.


Ignore that - it's the wrong way round!
But try looking for advance tickets, splitting at Birmingham.

(There may be more / better places to split, but I only looked at Birmingham)

If you book on the Cross Country website you can interactively choose your seats from a seating plan of the train - so it should be possible to play around a bit and get matching seats. I presume it only works for Cross Country services though (haven't tried it for any others).
