Newbie here who's only recently became interested in rail

I regularly pass through Edge Hill station on Northern services, and have noticed on each platform there's a small backlit sign on a white pole which says "Off". On occasions it is lit, on others it is not. Any idea what this is?

It is an Off indicator associated with the signalling. When the signal is at danger (on) then the indicator will be unlit. When the signal is showing a proceed aspect (off) the indicator will be illuminated. The purpose of the indicator is give an advance indication to the Driver (or Guard for station dispatch purposes) that signal is at danger or not. There are many places on the network with these indicators. Edge Hill is a prime example as the platforms are curved and you don't get much of a sighting of the signal especially when heading into Lime Street, so the Off indicator is a useful sign to have.
