Edge Hill Spur

Is it the Northern Line heading south out of central? , If so I hadn't realised it was only single track. With some of the recent talk about a new station, it looks like the Spur could be back on the table. http://peterirate.blogspot.com/2016/06/a-new-edge-hill.html

The article refers to the Wirral Line track replacement. Nothing to do with the Northern Line.

Yes it is but the photograph is not of the loop nor does it claim to be, it simply claims to be under Central station, in an old tunnel and no of the loop line tunnels or even the approach the old Mersey Railway approach from James Street look like that, as they are cut an cover.

The only possible position for the picture in the Echo is where the old Merseyrail tunnel has been connected through to the Cheshire Line Tunnel that headed out to Garston and no forms the south portion of the Northern line. As the Mersey railway platforms were below the Cheshire Lines platforms, the picture shows where a new tunnel has been cut with the tunnel rising up into the old one. The tunnel was 3 lines wide at that point.

The picture you refer to is taken above the down southport line (Brunswick to Liverpool Central) and reversal siding (see map for reference). Maintenance work is currently taking place in the top part of the tunnel,what you see people standing on in the picture is actually a false floor with the 2 lines mentioned above underneath.
Not possible for the public to see but if you were to stand in the tunnel below you see a load of scaffold above!.
The up southport line (Liverpool Central to Brunswick) uses a single bore tunnel and rejoins with the down line further down by the former St James station

Are you referring to the 1st of second pic?

I think the second pic is a bit further along So somewhere slightly to the left of where it says Duke Street junction?

Sorry my mistake,,didn't realise the article had been updated with more pictures! The second pic I was referring to,which is situated where the down southport line and reverser siding are. Spent many a time recently waiting there looking at the false ceiling that's been put in! Looking more closely at the first picture I can't place it. Knowing the Echo it's probably a stock picture they've just plucked from somewhere,they're not known for high standards of journalism!!

I think the photos probably come from Network Rail.

I think the photo with the train is probably taken from the end of the false ceiling/floor you describe, looking towards Brunswick. The little cut off on the left being made to facilitate the Edge Hill spur.

Thank you for that. I was struggling to get my head round which tunnel was being worked on in this Network Rail News Release.

I think the photo with the train is probably taken from the end of the false ceiling/floor you describe, looking towards Brunswick. The little cut off on the left being made to facilitate the Edge Hill spur.

Isn't it more likely that the picture is of the junction on the Wirral line between the old (double track) line from Central LL and the new (single track) Wirral loop line from Central DL?
ie between Central and James St.
The second track is used to transfer stock from Central LL to the Wirral Line, through the original tunnel.
If they are genuine NR pictures in advance of the Wirral Line work, why would they show a picture of the Northern Line?

Nope,been through there regularly and it looks quite different to that!
And probably just a stock photo used,the public aren't going to know whether it's Northern or Wirral!

In MALTS the plan was to go to St Helens. That was thought to be a viable cost effective route. If the airport link ever gets built then that too.
Central was not set up as a stopping station.
