Edexcel Health & Social A Level

Anyone take this exam today??

Thoughts on it?

Personally, I thought it was pretty awful =(

I didn't, but what is Health & Social? Never heard of it!

Not meant in a disrespectful way, A-Levels, whether Film Studies or Law are very important qualifications & difficult and time consuming when you are taking them.

It's a 2 year BTEC Course (yeah, laugh all you want people - but I'm clever enough to do Biology and Psychology as well) which basically looks at how the health sector does everything really. In year 12, you look at how Positive Environments are created etc, and then you look at effective communication in health care settings as well as how the law in health works and how it protects service users, then your examined on social aspects and lifestyle choices, as well as human growth and development.

In year 13 you take this further, investigating disease, and the effect this has on growth and development, creating your own health promotion, and then you look at the history of health and social, and back into the 1940's and the welfare state from when the beveridge report suggested NHS for all.

Then you can double it as well, by taking another 6 modules like I did =/

As a completely uninformed outsider, it sounds a little wishy-washy to me Bayum. However, a qualification is a qualification and I'm imagining that it has some relevance to what you'd like to make a career in?

As a Medical Student, I think that's a good sounding course. Certainly more useful than anything I was offered besides Chemistry and Biology; oddly enough Advanced Higher Maths isn't proving all that useful in my studies. I'd have loved to have been able to take that course.

Completely an aside - I've been putting my Economics degree to good use since February this year, and taken up a Teacher Training course, which is vocational learning on the job. I've got an A-level yr13 Economics class who sat an exam today on Market Economics, and the market of discussion was "train operating market in the UK", focussing primarily on price discrimination with advance ticketing, consumer surplus derived and the increased "improvements" made to the UK rail network.


It made for interesting reading! I took issue with several facts given however.

Wishy Washy meaning??

It's a lot harder than you think - and the history side of it is mostly upto A Level History standard - much less on the health side of things. And if you take the double side of it, the Psychology Exam you have to take, is even harder than the Actual A Level Psychology Exam.

Meaning that it doesn't sound like a traditional qualification, more bits of established courses put together into a new course.

Still, like I say, it's a qualification and if you can show the relevance of it to a job you'll apply for in the future when it comes to the interview stage then fair play.

Well, it is a proper qualification - theres more in it than there is in sport I can tell you that...

And it can get you into a lot more jobs than you think. Even jobs in NR could be gotten access into with it, because it even teaches you about the social side of people, as well as the structure of the NHS and different workforces within the NHS - which is easily applied anywhere else
