Edale to Glossop ?

Any suggestions please for the cheapest fare combination for an Adult Off Peak Day Single (or similar) from Edale to Glossop, please? (Travelling afternoon of Saturday 1st August 2009).

Presumably splitting the ticket into Edale-Marple and Marple-Glossop will result in a cheaper overall fare than buying a through Edale-Glossop ticket?

And are there any discounts for this journey for two or more people when travelling together?

Also, what route(s) can be taken for the part of the journey between Marple and Glossop?

Edale to Glossop has only one single fare, the Standard Day Single- Route Any Permitted at £11.50 (non discounted).

Edale to Marple again only has one single fare, the Standard Day Single- Route Any Permitted at £5.50 (non discounted).

Marple to Glossop does however have an Off Peak Day Single- Route Any Permitted (due to it being wholly within the GMPTE area), this is £2.90 (non discounted).

So splitting at Marple is going to be cheaper at £5.50 + £2.90 = £8.40. I would also suggest that this is going to be close to the cheapest option, considering Marple is one stop from the boundary of the GMPTE area and thus you are taking full advantage of the GMPTE subsidisation. Strines is in fact one station closer to Edale and still in the GMPTE area, this would reduce the combination to £5.10 + £3.10 = £8.20, but at the cost of severely reducing your options, as Strines has a significantly lesser service than Marple and has practically no direct trains from Edale.

The Permitted Routes between Marple and Glossop are unfortunately not very abundant due to the fact they have Guide Bridge as a Common Routeing Point. The only permitted route is therefore direct via the shortest distance from the origin to the destination over which a regular scheduled passenger train service operates. No doubling back (passing through the same station twice on a single journey) is allowed.

The Shortest route from Marple to Glossop is as follows:

Distance: 14 miles 58 chains
From Marple
to Romiley,
to Guide Bridge,
to Dinting,
to Glossop.

So your journey from Edale will require you to travel Edale to Romiley, then change for the service from Rose Hill Marple to Guide Bridge and then change again for the service to Glossop.

If you did want to take advantage of the discount by splitting at Strines, this would require you to travel Edale to New Mills Central, then change for the stopping service to Romiley, change again for the service from Rose Hill Marple to Guide Bridge and then finally change for the service to Glossop.

if you leave Marple after 6:30pm then you can get a GMPTE Evening Ranger for £2, before then a GMPTE rail ranger is £4.
Although it's a little more expensive, that would give you the flexibility to travel anywhere in the GMPTE area so you could travel via Manchester if you wanted to.

Thanks for the helpful responses, folks! Likely to getting the 1647 or the 1747 from Edale which both arrive at Marple some 20 minutes or so later.

Noted also that the 1747 (but not the 1647) calls at Strines, en route.

Any info as regards discounts for this journey for two or more people if all travelling together?

For just the 2 people, you won't get any groups discounts, I'm afraid as Northern don't sell duo tickets on this route. However, if there are 3 or more of you then you can get a group save discount. This is available for groups of 3 or 4 people. If you had more than this, then you could of course split into multiple, smaller groups.

Northern don't participate within the Groupsave scheme (http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/promotions/pr354fdc0a0400020101fea1769fbf60/details.html). East Midlands Trains do participate but I believe this is only on flows set by themselves. Northern set the Edale to Marple flow and GMPTE set the Marple to Glossop flow. So unfortunately Groupsave discounts are not available for the OPs journey.

theTrainline is not applying the discount for any of the three flows.

We can obviously assume an Avantix error...

Glynn, I agree this is probably an Avantix error. However, as the guards carry Avantix machines, and Edale is an unstaffed station so the OP would be buying on the train, would it not be the case that the group save fare would come up on the machine? Whether or not the guard would sell the ticket is another matter completely.

I'm pretty sure the Avantix fares database used within the machines is slightly different to the database released to the public and is updated more frequently. I remember asking for a fare about three months ago, that was shown within the Avantix program but when it came to purchasing it from the guard nothing was appearing on the machine...
