You've made it clear how you feel about OAO, why not just leave it at that? lots of assumptions though in your post.

You said you dont care about OA and you dont want to work there, thats great... means people who do actually want to work there get a job. Why not let them make their own mind up though instead of vocalising your negativity.

...plus it's a foot in the door. A chance to do the assessments, medicals and get the necessary competency/training - which IF things don't work out down the line, gives you a much better chance at getting in with another operator as you have the necessary experience and qualifications to take up another position quicker than someone starting from scratch.

If the role gives you PTS and competency to work on 800s, then you've got great transferrable skills for all the other operators using these trains.

This is a real shame, the comments on this thread have deterred someone who has put time and effort into the recruitment process to pull out a the last hurdle.

It's worth pointing out that in terms of open access only one company has ever failed and that was the Wrexham & Shropshire company that lasted 3years, all the others such as HT GC HX are still around.

Its comments like "But its always good not to sugar coat the state of open access" that put people off, what state exactly are they in? most do fairly well, probably better than some TOCs if they weren't government backed.

Kzr878 please don't let the attitudes/opinions of a few put you off, go for the interview... you don't have to accept a job, but it would be nice to have options surely?

I'm also going to delete this account because this is not the first time I've seen opinions effect someones decision like this when they came on here for advice and support.

W&S failed.

GC West Coast failed.

Hull Trains and GC East Coast furloughed staff and didn't run for months.

TOCs never stopped.


Pensions tend to be better at TOCs. Until recently, there was no staff travel for GC beyond their own services. No PRIV.

OA can best be likened to freight in that on the whole Ts and Cs are worse and as genuinely private businesses, they're far more susceptible to failure (and passenger downturn) than franchised TOCs. And that is a fact.

To be fair I don’t think anyone has said anything out of line or unduly negative. People have simply given a range of opinions. What irritates some of us is the way some people from outside the industry seem to get defensive and almost look down on TOC employees for pointing out a few home truths about open access that HR will gloss over. Nobody in this forum has any axe to grind one way or the other - that’s the beauty of asking questions on a forum like this (which also helped many of us experienced contributors through the railway recruitment process).

Equally the advice on here is worth exactly as much as you’ve paid for it (!) and nothing should be taken as gospel. As for the OP, only he/she knows what position they’re in, people can only make their own decisions based on research they do one way or the other. If someone is put off or encouraged by anything they’ve read on here or elsewhere then that’s entirely up to them.

That's a shame @Kzr878 but is of course your decision. Nobody has a crystal ball about the future of open access operators (or indeed all TOCs in these turbulent times) and it's still an excellent route into the industry that might give you future prospects. But all the best with future endeavours and keep a keen eye on other vacancies in the area!

I'm sorry if I offended amyone but I have decided to cancel my interview due to the comments about the company, too confusing and the risk of it going under, will be staying on furlough for a bit longer and hope that the travel industry picks up,

Hi does anyone have any ideas why some teams interviews are longer time slots than others, @New2rail1 @Sb80 how long was your teams interview for. Mine is tomorrow, but my slot is only for 15 mins... I was supposed to have one last week but it was changed, but that one was a 30 mins slot

It was mentioned in the assessment the interview would be 15 minutes are so.

When I had my interview on Friday, I had a 30min slot, but thenrealisty is it lasted 17 minutes.

I'm sure if you run over a bit, you won't be kicked outta the interview.

Thank you, was a bit worried thinking why is everyone getting 30 minutes and i'm only getting 15. so mine is this afternoon after I finish work, I think i'm all sorted
