Hi guys,

I caught the 0540 Cardiff to Manchester train about a month ago and noticed that the 0539 to Milford Haven and the 0540 to Manchester (separate services) both departed from platform 3. As I got up the stairs I saw the train coming and it seemed very long. I'm just wondering whether it comes from Canton depot as a 6-car unit (two 3-car units attached) and then splits? I presume that's what happened when I was there?

Thanks!

When I had sight of the drivers diagrams (some time ago now) they showed quite a few workings from Canton to Central of 4 and 6 cars which then split to form services to all directions on the main line and valleys networks.

It's a far more sensible use of drivers than bringing units out one at a time, particularly when drivers are booking on at Central and need to have a taxi to Canton, which was certainly the case at the time and probably still is.

General practice nationally not omly at Cardiff to bring units coupled from Depots/Sidings to stations to reduce number of movements and drivers.

Makes sense actually, I knew it was a sensible idea but wondered how many examples there is of this.
