My sources tell me that there has been a complete loss of signalling north of York. Services are currently being heavily delayed and/or cancelled. At Doncaster trains are being held and passengers are being told to come back tomorrow. Apparently the scenes at Leeds are chaotic. All second hand info (I will point out!).

as far as i am aware leeds is okay. doncaster and york are beyond chaotic though...

Theives have stolen copper wire norh of York apparently!

Power supply problems to York IECC according to a colleagues blackberry, Power restored at 1425 but lost again at 1555.

BBC News now reporting that Network Rail are saying its a problem with their signalling equipment, not vandalism.

Initially told it was a power failure, then a problem with NR equipment. Never heard anything about vandalism today.
A lot of Scotland fans left Scotland on early services so they may have just gotten through all of this, I guess some may be stuck between Newcastle & York.
NR were insisting no trains be moved into the area and all services were being held at principle stations along the route.
Advice is to abandon journeys!

Northbound, The 10:40am from Kings Cross to Newcastle got through on time, but the following 11:00 remains stuck north of York and has been there for over 5 hours. The 11:30 and 12:00 were terminated at York and the 12:30and 13:00 terminated at Doncaster. I don't know if the 13:30, 14:00 and 15:00 got beyond Doncaster as far as York, probs not. Since then all were cancelled.
Southbound, everything's been terminated at Edinburgh or Newcastle since the much delayed 14:00 from Edinburgh (terminated at Newcastle) and hte 9:50 from Glasgow which has been stuck near Thirsk for hours.
Nothing to confirm that there was any cable theft involved - I don't know where that came from.

Why the hell are they playing a Scotland/Brazil game in London? Has no-one told the organisers about sustainable travel? OK Brazil are coming over by plane, but to ship thousands of supporters to London is complete nonsense...blo++y amateurs...whose in charge of this? Clowns, the lot of them. There's a few northbound departures from Kings Cross this evening, still terminating at York, though with a bus replacement service around the affected area, with substantial delays. The 19:00 (my regular!) left late.
There's a departure scheduled for 22:13 which is hoped to run all the way through to Newcastle. But that might be the only northbound tonight.

Because it was the price we had to pay if we wanted to play Brazil. This is the way international friendlies work nowadays (e.g. Columbia are playing another Latin American side in Madrid this weekend, Mexico are playing a "home" game in the US)...
