use VT from Euston to Scotland.

Just beat me to it.

Got a message from my auntie coming back up from Kings Cross, apparently it's absolute chaos at Kings Cross, it seems National Express aren't sure themselves what to do! She's on a train now, but I advised her not to be expecting rainy Newcastle anytime soon!

EMT's Norwich to Liverpool trains are being diverted away from Grantham as well, according to National Rail.

The weather hasn't even been that bad up here either!

Pretty good guess, a tree on fire is what they were told at KGX. May have fallen onto the wires?

Whatever it was, the first train on the scene, a KGX to Leeds service, was delayed by 3 hours and 9 minutes, and trains are being backed up, it seems.

Or take the experienced traveller route and go via Sheffield, not knowing whether there will be any more disruption on that route. Personally, I would go with the sheep option, and stick with NXEC.

Tough one, but the amount of trains that are being cancelled, I'd strongly advise considering EMT to Sheffield.

Well we're moving, 1200 ex-EDI left Grantham 1559 with many standing passengers, including those who've just given up on northbound journeys.

Grand Central have also been caught up in it all, as you can imagine.

The 14:50 arrival at Sunderland from KGX is not expected until 17:01, which will royally bugger up the 17:30 southbound departure, as the train has to go to Heaton and back for fuel, doesn't it?

The live departure boards aren't showing the 16:05 arrival at KGX from Sunderland though, can't imagine that being close yet.

The 10:30 KGX to Aberdeen service, currently not far away from Newcastle, took 3 hours 46 minutes to get from Peterborough to York! So jamesontheroad, you've got away lightly this time mate!

What a difference 70-80 miles makes! It's really not bad in Newcastle. It's actually brightening up a bit now!

And it's still supposed to be summer!

According to National Rail website (www.livedepartureboards.co.uk):
The north-bound GC Service is on-schedule for leaving London KX.
Many NXEC services are being cancelled including:
16:57 Arrival from Aberdeen, 17:04 Arrival from Leeds, 17:41 Arrival from Glasgow Central & the Skipton service has been cancelled from KX.

Some FCC Services are delayed up to 25 minutes, with some Hull Trains services also delayed between 2 & 15 minutes.

York is being very over-optimistic:

ROUTE UPDATE:

Both areas are now clear, and trains are running to all destinations, subject to big residual delays and cancellations due to trains being in the wrbut ong place, etc.

Passengers are advised to get the first available service, as ticket restrictions have been lifted, and Scotland bound passengers can still get VT trains from Euston.

I took the 1630 from STP instead of the 1630 from KGX. Happy to report that this EMT service is running on time and isn't even very full.

Come and try the MML, compared with ECML it's slow, twisting, bumpy, and the trains are either noisy 222s or "charming" (i.e. old) HSTs. But at least the trains stop somewhere every fifteen minutes to give you a break...

Think it does, as that set goes to Kings Cross and stables overnight near Finsbury Park for the first northbound. However I recall the other day that a HST ran vice 180, which suggests that then (therefore perhaps now, who knows!) they had a spare set ready to go that could take the 17:30.

Looking at NRE, it left Sunderland on time so I presume they had a spare ready.

In times like this, it's better to go on EMT if possible. Just avoid one of the 'Mermaids' which can be identified by looking in the timetable, headed "MER". There's a good number of HSTs out of STP in the evening peak, and some of them start to empty out at Luton, and you certainly won't be standing north of Leicester, and you may have a bay of 4 to yourself after Derby. Meanwhile the ECML it will be totally wedged all the way to York.

I was at Leeds earlier, and hadn't heard a thing about this, until the computer woman came on:

"We are sorry that the 1135 service from London Kings Cross is delayed by approximately one hundred and fifty five minutes. This is due to the obstruction on the line. National Express apologises for this late running, and any inconvenience this may cause you"

Promptly followed by:

"May I have your attention please at Platform 6. We are sorry to announce that the 1440 National Express service to London Kings Cross has been cancelled. This is due to the obstruction on the line."

At Leeds they were telling everyone to go to Manchester Picc on TPE services and then catch VT to Euston. Bet the 185s were busy - glad I wasn't at work!!

Yikes... the only rain we had down here was from what 5 pm weds till god knows when in the evening...and that really was a downpour...so much so my freinds downstairs part of her house got flooded! and she only lives in Hook! I just got completely drenched on my way back tho...:-x

As for yesterday - Pretty much sunny down here all along with occasional light showers..and pretty windy...but no delays or anything here...3rd rail does have its advantages then!
