I know the control are trying to deal with tonight but surely with the stock out of place they must have an idea that the can run 2/6 train from Edinburgh (for example) as they only have 4 trains there.
And they will Publicise that in due course, the people running the shift now are the ones who will be also attempting to sort tomorrow’s service out.

To be fair to LNER, 4 cancellations this morning was a lot better than I expected. I was expecting with the level of disruption yesterday stock would be all over the place.

2 from Baldock cancelled so far this morning, to be far may be usual train crew issues.

Three up cancellations on the bounce from St Neots this morning - well, two cancelled and one should have left Peterborough 25 minutes ago but there's no sign of it anywhere on Traksy - presumably just listed as "Delayed". Dreading going on the first one to follow that lot but no WFH left this week...

There was a flurry of posts on Facebook about the fact that the staff at Finsbury Park last night had no idea whether trains were going to run, and didn't know what alternative arrangements were in place. There were signs showing disruption, but platform staff were clueless.

People were being told to "get a taxi and send us the bill" even though there were buses that had apparently been arranged. I know more than one person who was knocked back for this previously "because you did not seek the correct authorisation". Utter chaos.

This happened a few weeks ago when there was a one under at Stevenage, and the same results ensued.

Is there problems around Doncaster as well? There is an awful amount of yellow and red on the departure screens, mostly for Northern services.

Can anyone explain please, why trains on the Hertford loop can't be turned round at HN instead of Gordon Hill?
So, I'm not sure this really got answered. Seems odd that pretty much the whole peak from MOG to WGC and Hertford N. had to be wiped out: the OHLE for this of course was put in place for the 1976 electrification, so surely it can be isolated from other sections in the Stevenage area? Is this a problem with switching feeding from Corey's Mill to wherever the feed is in the KGX area?

Thank you @Gerald Fiennes - no it didn't.
I have found that asking direct questions about OLE can be a prickly subject.
Surely some form of OLE isolation either side of major turnback sites - e.g. HN - should be mandatory in order to avoid massive 'single point of failures' (SPFs) -such as this case.

More broadly OLE SPFs never occurred with diesel - or indeed steam before that - neither do they occur very often with 3rd/4th rail installs - look at LU.

I think the main problem was with the signalling. At least one freight service made it through the area on the day after the event but it disappeared off the radar between Gordon Hill and Stevenage.

The HN branch will be fed off its own CB at Langlely Jcn but suspect the down line into Stevenage Bay doesn't have its own separate CB so power off back to Hertford Nth whilst fire brigade were on site. I suspect the bigger issue is all the signalling back to HN was resignalled as parts of the ETCS test site so if the data cables were destroyed it would have taken all the signalling out initially. Now all data links should be duplicated and have diverse routing so you would have expected that the signalling could have been restored to HN then once fire brigade were clear the OLE could have been livened up a service restored to HN.

The fact this didn't happen should be questioned, and im sure it is, but will never be admission from NR or GN that the infrastructure didn't perform as it should have under this incident.

@Nicholas Lewis - thank you for that.
Someone will know - just hoping they feel honest enough to share.
Be nice if the 'big boys' (NT & GN) who are paid as such, acted as such.

There is a neutral section between Molewood Tunnel and HFN station, however as mentioned the issue was signalling not power supply to the OLE.

Hi @gm671 - that sounds authoritative.
So no loss of power at HN platforms 1, 2 & 3.
The signalling was obviously working at Gordon Hill and a freight train came all the way through.
So do you know beyond which point the signalling was failed and how the freight train passed all those signals which were presumably at red?
Many thanks.

Emergency special working or the fact the freight was diesel and the OHL was turned off on part of Hertford loop.

If they could of ran passenger trains they would!

For sure but for the reasons i postulated above they couldn't but its not acceptable that an incident over 8 miles away on a different route prevents operations at Hertford Nth to at least terminate trains from Moorgate. I don't know design specifics here but basic principle of SSI signalling is that the data links are duplicated and fed over geographical separate routes so an incident like this doesn't wipe out whole areas. Operationally you would want a key location like HN available under such scenarios. Anyhow we will never know but if there is a local rail users group they could at try and get to the bottom of it but no doubt as there is H.East as well.

Well written @Nicholas Lewis - better than I could express but precisely the point - someone knows they couldn't run and turn round at HN.
