It could be there is a lot of leisure travellers on their way for a holiday or going to see family over the festive period. For some strange reason, the railways do tend to be very buse with leisure travellers over the Christmas and New Year period ....

The 14:XX East Coast service from Haymarket to Aberdeen was absolutely mobbed.

As was the 14:36 Haymarket to Dunblane Service. 2 Car 158 standing right up the aisles. The "up" 11.06 Stirling to Edinburgh service was also a 2 car 158 with standing room only from Larbert.

Maybe the schools are on holiday.

Probably the same as it's the same Anglo-Scottish traffic but obviously West Coast vs East Coast.

I came back from Euston on Wednesday at 1.30pm, train to Scotland was packed with people and luggage. All seats in standard used, few sat around the toilets / between the carrages and as we boarded on the 'right side' of the train at Euston, 2 doors on the left were piled high with luggage making it fun for those trying to board / alight from Warrington onwards

That's OK I'm going the other way and I wouldn't even consider going up at Xmas in cattle class.

On the 07:35 EC HST from York to Aberdeen between Morpeth and Berwick at the moment for a final HST bash of 2011. This train is way quieter than expected and at a guess barely a quarter full.

To make things better for once on a Saturday coach B is lovely and quiet, no chavs, no cackling women, just how it should be.

Not EC again but I did notice that there were still loads of the cheapest their of first class advance fares left yesterday on Virgin.

in stark contrast to XC who wanted £60 ish on a couple of services otherwise it was a £100 or £150 FSR (fares railcard discounted) for me to hop on and hope to receive a coffee at some point somewhere. :roll:

I'm on the same train and yes, quieter than usual. Had no trouble finding vacant tables for 4 in coach B.

I'm on the 0830 ex KGX heading back to 'muchty for the festivities this train is also very quiet too! Plenty of space to spread out with. The guard has just been past with a bah humbug hat on - quite novel (well it made me smile anyway!).

Now on 12:00 EDB-KGX, about 5 pax in K and I have a 4-table to myself and am hoping no 'Festive First' types turn up! The loading doesn't match up to the price EC charged when I bought 1st AP in October.

NB EC are running a drinks trolley on this train, surprised as I thought that was 'off' on holiday services.
