Been looking at routes between Newcastle and King's Cross for Sunday and there doesn't seem to be a rail replacement bus between York and Doncaster, with it running York to Wakefield Westgate instead.

Is this right? Or am I missing something?

Correct they're staging the replacement bus service from Wakefield. Use LNER to Wakefield and change for a bus from there to York and then rail services northwards. Buses appear to be scheduled to depart Wakefield at xx:15 and xx:45 every hour.

This is correct. It is a shorter, and quicker journey to Wakefield instead of Doncaster and spreads the passenger numbers better (on previous weekends LNER have bussed York to Wakefield and Darlo to Donny Direct, not calling York).

It also avoids the long-running bridgeworks at Wentbridge on the A1 which have been causing severe delays.

These are still on, but only affect southbound now.
North bound is cleared.

The arrangements this weekend put severe pressure on the relatively few Avanti Edinburgh- London services whlst prior to 2010 Cross Country ran Scotland - midlands & beyond via the EC & WC main lines so could easily divert or strengthen services via whichever route wasn’t closed for engineering etc.

And I would imagine the 2 hourly TPE Edinburgh - Manchester trains were busier as well with customers changing at Carlisle/Preston etc.
