A signal failure at King's Cross around 2pm this afternoon was affecting services when I was there.

I'm on the 14:35 King's Cross to Leeds which was delayed leaving due to a fault with the locomotive and has now stopped north of Peterborough. Apparently a 'piece of equipment has broken down on the track on front of the train' - the driver went to see if they could fix it but we've just been told they can't so we're setting off back to Peterborough station. Does anyone know what's happening?

1D18 you're on then. Whatever it is looks like its between Peterborough & Tallington. There isn't much I would think a driver could fix himself between those 2 places, there are a few crossings both manual & auto. Looking at the signalling diagram there is a set of points just ahead of where you are now. Maybe those in the heat have gone kaput? I wouldn't have thought they would've had any engineering kit out on the running lines at this time of day. That said the up fast & up slow both show Line Blocked just before Stoke Tunnel.

Thanks, we're now waiting for a train to clear the platform at Peterborough so we can get in

I doubt if anybody on the Forum knows any more than you at the moment. Have you asked the Guard or ECML Twitter ?

The guard has been very good, making frequent announcements about the length of the delay. They're also giving out free water which is great.

They haven't said much about what's causing the issue with the track though, so I was interested as to what could have broken that the driver could also attempt to fix. I was also wondering how the trains behind us were doing as Virgin haven't put anything about disruption on their website.

It looks like you've now gone past whatever it was :)

Seems the heat is playing hell with S&T on the ECML today.....and now getting word of a broken down 91 full of melting pax broken just North of Sandy as well blocking the Down Fast at Biggleswade. Oh joy. At least its not Friday! How many windows will they break for some air I wonder.

I can understand how they feel - the air-con on this train has stopped working at some point in the journey! At least we're moving now

Well, I arrived at Leeds 59 minutes and 30 seconds late according to Real Time Trains... time to submit a delay repay form and see how much I get back! :)

I've spoken to someone who was on a KX-Leeds train this afternoon. She said it was halted north of Peterborough because the track had buckled in the heat, and the train reversed back into Peterborough and then went forward again.

Must have been the same train as me then - that's exactly what happened to the one I was on, although I didn't hear that the track had buckled.
