Heavy delays tonight due to a broken down freight train at Retford. The concourse at Kings Cross was very crowded when I passed through a few minutes ago!

It's probably my imagination but it just seems hardly a week goes by now without some sort of severe disruption on ECML.

It happens fairly often, and it always seems to be the two-track section between Stoke Tunnel and Retford.

It always seems to be a broken down freight train too.

Is there any more disruption on the EC mainline compared to the WC? Wernt EC's right time performance figures better than Virgins over the last 12 months? I cant remember the last time I was significantly delayed finishing a shift.

One of my local councillors tweeted her journey- her train (91 + mark 4s) got reversed back to Doncaster, a 67 was attached, and off it went via Lincoln, terminating at Peterborough (which was OK as she jumped onto a direct XC to Cambridge, I think she was supposed to be going via Stevenage)

Wernt EC's right time performance figures better than Virgins over the last 12 months?

Looking at the stats from day-to-day, it's hard to see how they couldn't be... Virgin seem to usually be consistently poorer, at least for PPM.

Given that one of the earlier posts mentioned that many of the delays are caused by broken-down freights, is there any difference between the numbers of freights on the ECML as opposed to the WCML that could account for the difference, or are there in fact more freight failures per train on the ECML than on the WCML?

There is more freight on the WCML. However more of the WCML has four tracks so if a freight breaks down there is less disruption as other trains can get past it.

Good point! I wonder what the costs for four-tracking the remaining two-track ECML sections between King's Cross and York would be?
