So, all that needs to be done infrastructure wise is to build a few looped stations along the Newcastle-Edinburgh line (for the local stoppers) and resignal the S&C to improve capacity there? Simple!

A start would be building loops on the line east of Drem. As it is, the North Berwick service leaves Waverley just after one ECML service, and gets to Drem junction just before the next one, given all the stops in East Lothian.

This means any late running service northbound is liable to miss it's "slot" at Drem and end up crawling past Mussleburgh as it can't get round the local service ahead.

If only GNER's plan for "Edinburgh Parkway" had happened - that'd have been the perfect place to do it (or Virgin's plan to avoid Morpeth). More loops are needed further down the line, of course, plus a second platform at Dunbar (at the moment any northbound service has to cross the southbound line twice to get in/out of Dunbar).

Would be good to have a clockface pattern for the local stations on the line, but I think East Linton is a bit of a red herring

Renaissance costed it and only Glasgow-Nottingham would make any money. IIRC they were looking to introduce this and the Glasgow-Liverpool service in 2011, but thatw as before the recession and they sold their stake in WSMR.
