Man injured in garage 'explosion' in Darlington

A man has been airlifted to hospital after a large fire broke out at an industrial estate in Darlington.

The blaze ripped through a garage on the Cleveland Industrial Estate in Forge Way. A 250m cordon is in place after reports of an explosion.

County Durham and Darlington Fire Brigade said the fire broke out at the single-storey building which is used as a gas conversion centre for cars.

The injured man suffered burns. Train services have also been disrupted.

James Richardson, who works at nearby printing firm Addo, has been asked to leave his work building twice along with six colleagues because of the risk of explosion.

He said: "It was pretty dramatic - there have been several explosions.

"We were evacuated for about an hour when it first broke out then allowed back in. But we've just been asked to leave again."

Gas cylinders

The 63-year-old casualty is in a serious condition in the hospital's burns unit, an air ambulance spokesman said.

Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said the premises in Forge Way are used to convert cars to use liquid petroleum gas, and a tank may have exploded.... (read more)

I got a call about this a while ago.

Worker airlifted to hospital after explosion at Darlington industrial estate

A MAN was last night in a serious condition after suffering severe burns in an explosion at a Darlington industrial estate.
The 63-year-old victim was airlifted to hospital with head, arm and hand injuries after the incident at the Cleveland Industrial Estate yesterday lunchtime. Witnesses reported hearing a series of bangs and said the man, who was working on a vehicle at a business that converts petrol cars to gas, was thrown several feet into the air by the force of the blast.

Emergency services were called to Forge Way, on the estate, at about 1pm as a plume of smoke rose into the sky and a large fire spread.

Staff at other industrial units were evacuated and a 200 metre exclusion zone was imposed around the blast site.

The explosion also caused delays on the nearby East Coast Main Line, with trains brought to a standstill.

In my neck of the woods!

Of interest, 6D43 with 60063 was routed via Ferryhill, Norton, Eaglescliffe and into Northallerton (Northallerton at 1705), and so did 1E18 hauled by 67021 with 91110 DIT which came up the bank at 1740.

Lineside fire involving gas cylinders. All lines were blocked, SLW then introduced then the line re-opened in full once the authorities were satisfied the cylinders were safe and the fire under control.

Crikey, I didn’t expect to hear of any drags occurring due to this incident. The privatised railway seems to be getting better at dealing with problems it encounters!

I nearly fell off my chair when I heard as well! Newcastle 'thunderbird' dropped onto the set, driver with the correct route knowledge available, straight round, loco off at York, line re-opened and loco straight back to Newcastle!!

Set was about 35L off Newcastle, 90L at Northallerton and lost another 15mins at York for uncoupling, but at least the job kept moving whilst road transport wasn't available :D
