Major delays at Retford today (I am on. 1E13 Inverness to KX). 90 late

Could the Lincoln Spalding route not have been used rather than what I assume is being piloted through the disruption?

I know not all Azumas have Diesel but this one must have as it came from Inverness.

I am currently on 1S21 (14:30 London to Edinburgh) carrying almost three trainloads of people due to the cancellation of the 14:00 Aberdeen and the 15:00 Stirling.

We are losing time en route due to the train being extremely busy, resulting in people trying to squeeze in. We have just left Newark and will likely incur more delay due to the problems at Retford.

It’s a mess today.

The vast majority of LNER's fleet is unable to make use of the diversionary route, and the services worked by units that can use the diversionary route may not have been crewed by people that sign the diversionary route - only Leeds and Doncaster crews sign the diversionary route - most ex-Scotland trips are crewed by Newcastle and Kings Cross crews.

Sadly short notice diversions are rather tricky on the modern railway, that’s just the way it is set up.

It's also about how much time you're actually losing through the disrupted area. Overall for all passengers, it may be better just to go slowly through the problem area.

On a quick check of RTT, LNER haven't sent anything via Lincoln and GC only one.

Thank you. Helps me understand. The delay was c60 min. In total 90 as we were 30 late leaving York, although partly by sitting on the up slow north of York to let the Redcar Manchester service overtake. I presumed that was as we would be held up anyway.

Last time I did the diversion a few Saturdays ago that was an extra hour. The crew signing issue may explain the stop in Doncaster that day too.

Whatever the issue was seems to have cleared as stuff is now moving between Newcastle and Edinburgh in both directions, seemingly without issue.

RTT was showing 91119 for the 1800 Kings Cross to Edinburgh earlier. Obviously that won’t be what happens!

1V64 for Crosscountry came to a stand at Cramlington with brake issues, and the parking brake stuck in.

Despite 2 drivers attempting to fix, it was not possible, and an Evacuation onto 1V68 was about to start, that was brought wrong line alongside.
On V68 was a driver manager, and they managed to release brake allowing the train to move forward at 30mph to Newcastle where it terminated.

Theft of signal cabling, multiple signals needing to be passed at danger due to emergency working
Each train needing to contact signaller and get permission to enter section and contact again when out

Network rail working to replace cabling but expected to be end of the day and into the night to get it all fixed

Emergency working withdrawn at 1900.

However 3 signals D161 & D163 on the Down (Northbound) and D 164 on the Up (southbound), will need trains talking past them.

normal working has resumed on the UP line at Ranskill. Services on the Down line will be required to be talked past signal D163.

Lumo were forced to drop passengers in York on a mid morning service to go forward by LNER. Seems a bit odd they don't go to Doncaster to go forward with Hull Trains.

Hull Trains only managed to run one train through to London anyway

I believe a broken down CrossCountry Voyager added to the mess. 13:05 Edinburgh to Plymouth according to JourneyCheck terminated at Newcastle 'due to a fault on this train'.

There was only limited number of paths available due to the emergency special working in place.
Preference would have been given to LNER as per the route contingency plans in place, with blanket ticket acceptance across all TOCS and Open access operators.

Terminated at Newcastle at 17:19 according to realtime trains. Not bad at all - hopefully the Voyagers engines were working to provide heating for passengers :).
