Does anyone know if a Glasgow Queen St to KGX EC & Connections Advanced Ticket allows BoJ at Edinburgh? I know Advance ticket normally do not allow BoJ but could I catch an earlier Glasgow - [STN]EDB[/stn] service (as it is not reserved) and break at Edinburgh for a couple of hours or would I have to catch the service in my itinerary?

Yes, as the connecting service is non-reservable - see Q25 at the bottom of this post.

I just wanted to add some re-assurance from personal experience, that I have done exactly the same thing when travelling between Glasgow and Newcastle on several occasions, making use of some additional time in Edinburgh while using an Advance ticket.

You can catch an earlier connecting service if the booked connecting service is not reservable, but you can't break your journey at Edinburgh. This means you must not leave the station premises.

I'm not aware of any exceptions, so officially, no you shouldn't break your journey by the definition of a Break of Journey (see here for details) as that isn't permitted.

But you can have a "break" at Edinburgh Waverley station

Yes, of course, you can take an earlier train providing it is "appropriate", as stated in the Conditions. (See here for details, under " A common question is...")

A "break" at Edinburgh Waverley? Of course, there are extensive facilities and numerous shops within this station (see map) which you can use between trains. Using such facilities and merely having a "break" at the station, is not a "Break of Journey"

No, you don't have to do that.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm glad to hear I can jump on an earlier train over to EDB, the 10 minutes connection the itinerary booked means no time to explore M&S....

There is lots to see in Edinburgh Waverly station, M&S is nice and Burger King is worth a visit too. Just make sure you don't walk up the unbarriered ramp towards the bridge, as that would be very bad and in breach of the T&C's of your ticket.

Sorry, I did assume that the OP was wanting to stock up at the M&S - you need a couple of hours to get round the whole shop as they stock a wide range of products.
