Sorry if this has already been broached, it’s quite a difficult subject to search...

Just wondering if eating and drinking is allowed on trains under the current covid restrictions. I understand nobody is going to castigate me for taking a sip of water, but will I be able to take my sandwiches on board and enjoy them mask free without derision?

There seems little guidance on this on TOC websites.

I’m making a 4 hour journey, so I don’t think eating is unreasonable.

TIA.

It is allowed.

Many train companies have reintroduced catering or are in the process of doing this

Some train companies, such as Northern, display misleading instructions stating not to eat or drink, but this is not the legal position nor a contractual term and you are absolutely entitled to eat and drink reasonably, within the law.

So people can remove their face covering to eat and drink? Makes the train even less attractive.

Some one posted a video on Facebook a while back on how to make a biscuit last for the duration of a flight as they objected to Facemasks!

I managed to stretch a water bottle, coffee and biscuit last from Edinburgh - Durham, and subsequently did the same on the way back on Saturday, it was a very nice experience in all.

Well, the stickers do say 'please do not eat or drink' rather than a order.
and today they are handing out bottles of water at Barrow!
better save it until you are safe at home.

Also Avanti have re-introduced First Class catering this week, although it's a bit limited but not bad.

I’m impressed that Avanti are now offering hot cooked food onboard in first class, are LNER still only doing snacks and a hot drink which, for Edinburgh - London on the stopper isn’t really adequate?

I travelled with LNER on Tuesday from York to Edinburgh. Collecting a coffee, water, crisps & biscuits from coach M was no problem but they could if easily offered a pre wrapped sandwich or wrap (similar to the weekend menu)and popped it into the bag too. On my return from Edinburgh staff came through taking at seat orders and brought them in a bag to the seat, which I preferred.

Most Avanti first class lounges are now open too, table service and limited numbers obviously.
