I have this in reserve if I hadn't got a good deal and some much-needed help at the time I needed it from my cousin, but to be honest whilst I will what moan and grown about Heathrow at the time I'll be glad to cut out the hassle factor and apparently flying with Austrian is very pleasant
Austrian was a great carrier to fly short haul with, but since COVID they've cut down on their onboard service, we used to get drinks (including alcoholic), snacks, etc all included as part of the ticket price, now all that is an add-on. You just get a chocolate and some water as part of the complimentary service in short haul Economy, there isn't much standing them out from other European carriers. They are a great carrier to fly long haul with though.

Can you pre-order meals in short haul? Asking as doing what might be considered normal breakfast time by most people. I'm checking in and farting about at Heathrow and then in flight over what might again be considered most people's lunch time which will be practically done and dusted by the time I've transferred from the airport to where I'm going to stay
And just to keep it vaguely to topic, it's the sort of time when I could. Well go a couple of EasyJet pizza slices which are excellent

The imaginatively named "Vienna Lounge" has to be one of the best contract lounges out there. Decent food and drink selection, plenty of seats with a variety of layouts, excellent showers (BA - take note!) and an outdoor terrace for fans of "fresh" air, as you say.

Birmingham's growth carries on, with Reykjavik, Innsbruck, Krakow, Prague and Marrakesh joining the network there.

I'm actually surprised that Easyjet haven't launched a base in Kraków. It would seem to be an obvious point of expansion, but they really do seem reluctant to head into Ryan/Wizz land despite the fact that Kraków is now becoming incredibly popular among tourists from Western Europe.

There is a few countries where Easyjet are not big or present. I think Sweden, Ireland and Poland.

It‘s true they’re not especially big in Central and Eastern Europe although I would say they’re not unadventurous. They do operate much more than Ryanair to countries like Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia and they’re introducing Cape Verde.

ROI
ROI would mean you have basically a single major airport in the country (Dublin) and you are being in direct competion with RyanAir on the UK-Dublin routes.

Serving Shannon (as a transit option to Aer Lingus flights to the US with Preclearance) could be really interesting though, but again, RyanAir is deep in those routes

I seem to recall Easyjet served Knock for a short while.

A very cheap way with Easyjet to get to Vienna is to book to either Salzburg or Innsbruck, where you can find some amazing deals, from either Gatwick or Luton (if flying from London) and get a train into Vienna. I did this last December, and whilst taking longer, I saved some £250 compared to flying with Austrian Airlines from Heathrow to Vienna return.
Not much use outside the ski season...
I have done Manchester-Munich on EZY and train on to Vienna, but it's slow to about Wels before the Austrian Westbahn ABS kicks in.
And Gatwick is the last airport I'd want to use.

Harsh. South terminal is absolutely horrendous past security, but North terminal is okay. Luton and Stansted are almost as bad and ate generally more difficult to get to

Stansted was really busy the other day past security, now where to sit. Luton depends on how busy but its been quiet on Saturday evenings.

No, not the terminal issues, but travelling via Gatwick or any London airport from where I live is a non-starter.
I once did Manchester-Gatwick-Bologna on BA when they did Manchester-Gatwick flights, never again.

T3 would like to have a word, such a dismal place to wait.
Usually T3 is the quickest through security and they have a nice, quiet waiting area upstairs with the little cafe; great if downstairs is packed, and on return the flights are generally small EU flights (easyjet/ryanair) meaning you probably won't end up behind the jumbo's from the Middle East/Asia and hellishly long passport queues. Much prefer T3 than 1, except it's a 10' walk from the station, but it can be done outside avoiding the elevators and crowds going to the car-parks, the only downside of T3 I've noticed is the shops, eg Boots, are smaller and not as well stocked and stuff you need due to the 100ml/1l limits (toothpaste, antiseptics etc to take with you) go quickly.

Bad day at Manchester Airport today after a power failure in the early hours.
Power is said to be back, but there are consequential problems.
T1, T2 currently suspended; T3 is open but delays are likely.
Overall at least 60 flight cancellations and as many delayed, at 1500 Sunday.
Looks like the baggage and security systems are affected.

I often think the aviation response to large-scale disruption is just as bad as rail's, but with less accountability.
The information systems just can't cope, and there are conflicting messages from the airport and individual airlines, who only look after their own interests.
Back to normal tomorrow, the airport CEO says.
TUI has deferred some flights to Monday, and will pay 1 day pro-rata compensation, whatever that is.
easyJet, who had many cancellations, said it could only carry passengers with hand baggage, as hold bags couldn't be processed.

EasyJet sees largest number of cancellations

In these situations, it can be difficult to pin down the number of cancellations and delays as things are constantly changing on the ground.

But aviation analytics firm Cirium has just told us that as of 13:00 today:

  • 66 departures from Manchester Airport have been cancelled today alone (25% of all departures)
  • 50 inbound flights have also been cancelled - just under 20% of all arrivals
  • EasyJet has seen the largest number of cancellations
As mentioned, these figures are subject to change, but we'll continue to bring you all the latest updates and advice on what to do if you've been affected.

I think there's a mixed response to disruption across the aviation industry, just like there is across rail operators. I've found easyjet to be okay, much better than some of the other budget operators. Inevitably the smaller the base the airline has at the airport the worse the in-person response, although they aren't bad at getting messaging out via the app.

The big mistake is probably taking any notice of the airport at all. They don't have comms people to manage a public-facing response, and ultimately none of the decisions are up to them anyway. All they can do is tell the airline "we won't be able to get bags to this flight" or "we won't be able to dispatch anything until at least 1400, but we aren't busy after that, so you might get your flight dispatched at 1800".

At that point it's completely up to the airline to decide whether they have the crew in place to take the offered slot, and whether to tie their plane up in the disruption and potentially cause knock-on delays through day, or to just cancel the Manchester legs. It's also up to the airline to work out whether to put customers up, bus them to nearby airports, get volunteers for refunds or anything else.

easyJet is taking bags again, apparently, for a restart of normal operations from 1630.
At about 1500 the airport web site was showing the usual list of departures with a few cancellations, but with a ticker saying T1 and T2 were not processing passengers.
It also showed the usual 15-minute queue time at security at all terminals - pull another one!

Easyjet has announced flights from Derry (Northern Ireland) to Liverpool and Edinburgh.
Low-cost airline EasyJet has announced it will fly from City of Derry Airport for the first time with the introduction of new two routes later this year.
It will see flights to and from Edinburgh and Liverpool, which will operate twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays throughout the year. The new routes will begin on November 4.
EasyJet said the new flights will provide "stronger domestic connectivity" for its customers between Northern Ireland and key cities in the UK.
Ali Gayward, EasyJet's UK country manager, said the airline was "delighted" to announce the launch from City of Derry Airport for the first time this winter.
"We are proud to be the largest airline in Northern Ireland and by expanding our network we are providing our customers in Northern Ireland even greater choice and UK connectivity, all with great value fares and friendly service, and we look forward to welcoming them on board," she said. City of Derry Airport's managing director Steve Frazer said it is an "incredible day" for the airport and the entire north-west region.
"The launch of EasyJet services will be a key economic driver for business investment in the north west and inbound travel and tourism, and we are proud to be able to help grow and develop these sectors in our local area," he said.

Brenda Morgan MBE, head of business development at City of Derry Airport, added:

“In addition to our exciting collaboration with EasyJet, we are delighted to be able offer connectivity to two key UK hubs throughout the year.

"Services to Edinburgh and Liverpool have been in demand from both corporate and leisure travellers in the Northwest and the flight schedule for Monday’s and Friday’s provides fantastic timings for business travel during the week and weekend breaks for the leisure market.”

City of Derry Airport is owned by Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Easyjet has announced several new routes, 2 from Liverpool and 1 from Gatwick with 2 going to Egypt and 1 to Norway.
easyJet has announced two new routes from Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Beginning this winter, the low cost airline will fly from Liverpool to Oslo, Norway and Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
Ali Gayward, easyJet‘s UK country manager, said: “We are delighted to be announcing two new routes from Liverpool, to Sharm-el-Sheikh and Oslo - a brand new destination for easyJet this year, which will appeal to leisure and business customers alike - while Sharm adds to the choice on offer for those looking for winter holidays this year. These new and exciting destinations in our network provides our customers from across the North West with even greater choice and connectivity this year all with great value fares and friendly service, and we look forward to welcoming them on board.”Flights between Liverpool John Lennon and the Norwegian capital will begin on November 29 this year and will operate twice a week. The airline's Liverpool to Sharm El-Sheikh service will commence on February 14 next year and will also operate twice a week - with flights on Mondays and Fridays.Paul Winfield, aviation director for Liverpool John Lennon Airport added: “We are excited to announce a further two new routes, meaning eight new routes will start this winter season, complementing new services to Hurghada, Corfu and Enfidha. The new route to Oslo will allow football supporters to fly direct to Liverpool to see the reds, whilst Sharm El Sheikh is an exciting new long sector addition to the network.”

TUI currently flies to Sharm El Skeikh 1x weekly from Newcastle, meaning those in the Pennines have a choice of going to Newcastle or Liverpool.

Budget carrier easyJet will serve the Egyptian city of Luxor for the first time in more than a decade when it starts a new service from Gatwick this winter.

Flights to Luxor will start on November 11, with twice-weekly departures on Mondays and Thursdays.

Luxor is home to famous monuments such as the Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings and the tomb of Tutankhamun.

For first time, easyJet holidays will offer a river cruise package holiday from Luxor, with seven-night Nile cruises in partnership with Jaz Hotels and Resorts. Luxor hotels are also available to book with easyJet holidays.

I am flying easyJet in September for the first time in years.
What can I expect? What seats do they have in the A319? Last time I flew one with easyJet it was an old cloth seat. I know they're fitting their planes with leather slimline seats.

Do they have WiFi and plug sockets fitted?

Limited legroom (unless in the front or emergency exit rows) and no recline. It's not particularly comfortable for long flights.

Think that is almost a matter of luck. The slimline seats have less padding but the slimness means there's marginally more kneeroom.

Haha, as if! No chance. Progress on installing such 'luxuries' seems very slow across Europe; they are standard features in the US and many other parts of the world, but in Europe only 'legacy' carriers have them, and even then geographic coverage for WiFi is patchy (there's often no connection over the sea) and plug sockets often don't work or the crew forget to activate them.

WiFi is fitted to every BA short haul plane, and USB sockets are fitted to the majority. Thought it was standard in 2024.

What's the boarding like? I apparently have speedy boarding, is this worth it? Or do they act like Ryanair and board before the plane is ready? I'd rather chill in the departures until the plane properly boarding instead of rushing and standing around on the Airbridge

Much to my frustration, it isn't. None of the Embraer LCY fleet has it, despite currently undergoing a refresh to fit densified seating - goes to show where BA's priorities lie...

They've also not fitted it on the last couple of years' A32xneo deliveries. Presumably this is another cost-cutting measure to avoid paying the higher prices Airbus wanted for WiFi fitment, instead waiting until the first major maintenance check several to do it in-house.

USB sockets are fitted to the majority
Again, frustratingly not. Lots of the older aircraft don't have it (e.g. some of the G-EUOx, G-EUPx, G-MIDx and G-GATx series aircraft). And as mentioned, even for those that do have it, I find myself having to remind the crew to switch the power on half the time. Given that it's a clear point of differentiation you'd have thought they'd maximise the use of the facility, but seemingly not.

Effectively two similarly sized queues - speedy boarding and regular boarding. You want to be reasonably early in the speedy boarding queue if you want to get anything in the overhead lockers near where you're sitting.

Nothing on the BA Airbus 319 I used recently.

If you don't want to pay for seat selection in advance then wait until about 4 hours before departure then you will be able to see on the EasyJet App what seat you have been allocated. If its not suitable then you can pay at that point to change it.

I thought there would be acres of space now they are charging for carry ons.

I've never really had a problem on BA getting the bags in the lockers, despite it being included in the fare

Ahh, I've almost always had the A320s which have had both, including a lot of NEOs which had WiFi.
I knew the G-GATx aircraft didn't have the chargers but that's an exception to the rule

Easyjet don't do wifi or sockets. Norwegian is the only economy operator I can think of that does do wifi.

I wouldn't pay for speedy boarding - you do usually get on the plane before non-speedy boarders, but half the plane has speedy boarding. I've never once struggled to get my underseat bag in the overheads without speedy boarding. I've also never seen anybody boarding late with a full-size checkin have to put it more than half a dozen rows away.

Easyjet do seem to be boarding you early into a pen or the airbridge at quite a lot of airports. It's perhaps less often than Ryanair, but still often enough to regard speedy boarding as potentially a negative perk.

Paying for seats. They seem to try to allocate middle seats to people who don't pay, but haven't got the "oh no! you've been given a middle seat" messaging down as well as Ryanair. In both cases you can pay to change, but there's also a reasonable chance that one of the seats next to your middle seat will be empty anyway. On the type of flights where people do pay, it can sometimes be quite empty up the back. I'd say that more often than not I get a better seat than I'd have been prepared to pay for anyway.

All of this comes with the caveat that I rarely bother to travel in the school holidays, and the peak time experiences could be a lot more miserable.
