anyone know if easyjet have allocated departure gates at schiphol and what they are - as I believe M requires separate security checks even if airside?

might be soon having to start a weekly commute from Newcastle to Brighton and worked out it is quicker to fly to Gatwick via schiphol however would have to use 2 airlines with a 45 min changeover time and concerned this might be cutting things a little fine...

They are usually pier H, which is the LCC non-Schengen departure pier.

45 minutes between two non-conntected tickets is an absolute non-starter.

Schiphol has long taxi times and can have delays in fog, and delays first thing in the morning with the volume of flights.

UK ones can't be M, because those gates don't have passport control so are Schengen only.

Wouldn't even go there. You will miss that (and have to buy a new ticket) more often than you will make it.

Agreed. I would discount this idea immediately. It is incredibly risky.

Have you factored in the productive time on a train for working/eating/resting, especially in First Class? You can do Newcastle to Brighton with a single change at Kings Cross St Pancras.

yeah, was more just that any reasonable priced tickets on the 4:45 into London seem to have all but dried up since virgin have taken over - and return flights are appearing to cost less if booked around 3 weeks in advance - would also mean not having to leave the house until 5 as opposed to 4:15

never flown easyjet from schiphol before so was just kind of hoping they would also be gate 'd' as that was probs the only way I could see it working...oh well

It wouldn't work reliably even if they did all use the D gates. (Do you even arrive inside security at AMS, i.e. do they trust UK security, or do you have to pass through again to connect? I haven't changed there since they changed from gate security).

For a reliable connection at AMS you need *at least* two hours. Preferably more if missing it will result in your wallet being hit hard.

Fly(may)be appear to operate Newcastle to Southampton at vaguely suitable times, you could then take a connecting Coastway train or two. That's what I'd do I reckon. Not cheap, but then weekly commuting rarely is.

While the UK is trusted, 45 minutes is just absolutely not enough time on a separate coincidence (I can't think of a better word, since this is not a connection).

As I said this morning, among others, don't even think about this as viable.

There are trains which might be slower, but definitely less stressful. Though I concede with Southern at the moment it's not brilliant.

KLM certainly offer very quick connections at Amsterdam, down to 40 minutes I believe. I'm sure they wouldn't do it if it wasn't at least possible, but it is indeed tight. Whilst many travellers can be assured that they will be offered conveyance to their final destination, missing a tight connection regularly on your commute would be very problematic (and a weekly phone call to your boss saying you're stuck in Amsterdam probably won't go down too well!).

For non-Schengen to non-Schengen connections, you do not currently need to pass through security again. So UK-UK via Amsterdam would not require a security check in Amsterdam. But if your hand luggage was checked at the gate due to the flight being busy (this is quite common with both KLM and easyJet) you could be stuck having to pass through immigration and clear security again (basically you'll miss your flight if it's a tight connection). Amsterdam is a very big airport, and there's a good walk between each concourse. D-H would take quite some time. If it is KLM-easyJet, it's a long walk/run.

What the OP is asking is very tough. easyJet and flyBe usually use the H gates from what I remember, KLM and BA tend to use D (although I have seen flyBe go from the D gates on occasion, possibly using the remote stands), so you're looking at a very tight connection in Amsterdam, and 45 minutes allows precisely no contingency time. I think you will run into problems more often than not, and would suggest that you try an alternative route.

I - and others - have all noted this this is not a connection. KLM of course do offer connecting tickets with very short connection times. But this is not a connection. This is a coincidence.

All my recent Flybe flights have been from D (fair few in the last few weeks).

Not only is Schiphol big on the passenger transfer side, it has potential for long taxi runs meaning you can touch down on time and still be late at the terminal if ATC decide you're going that way.

The majority of times I have flown in to Schipol the plane has touched down on the Polderbaan which feels closer to Norwich than it does to Amsterdam.

I wouldn't risk 45 minutes on one ticket where the airline will rebook you should you miss the second flight, never mind consider it on two separate tickets.

They do, but likely you won't make it, and if you do your bags definitely won't. One hour absolute minimum, two better, three ideal. And that's on a through ticket.

I've only visited Schipol twice. Both were KLM connections. both were 45 minutes. Both were made without incident. I even had a quick look in the shops.

hey guys, cheers for the replys

for a start it looks like it may now be located in Chester rather than Brighton which is another headache from ncl

in terms of lateness, I can't get to either location for 9am however I do it, so will be looking to arrange for a little flexibility, i.e start when I get there so I don't have to travel on Sunday night

I regularly get the 5:50 to schiphol and it has never been late - usually arrives early as I am sure they timetable the taxi-ing to the gate in, as it usually shows the arrival time as 1hr20 after departure despite being a 50 min flight - so the reason I was asking is if it had been close I might have entertained the idea as I would have been confident on making the connection (bare in mind I don't do luggage lol)

as a side note when commuting to cheltenham for 10 months I used a connection at York that national rail told me wasn't possible and I only missed the connection once which is why I was thinking of maybe pushing it

all speculation still anyway but will probs not bother trying to use it as a regular route if easyjet gates are in H, although might give it a shot before the end of the year if I need to maintain gold flying blue membership as there seems to be little cost difference between the two heh

I'm sure BA used to fly direct to Gatwick, did no one use it? this would really be handy... - as an off topic thought, when looking at the best way to get there there only seems to be budget airlines which cover regular European routes which makes it useless for connections - difficult to see a case for expanding over Heathrow...

Nipping across York station is very different to nipping across Schiphol airport.

The consequences of missing a plane are usually much more expensive than missing a train.

BA do fly AMS-LGW, but are probably pricey so aren't showing up in the first page of skyscanner etc. Or do you mean NCL-LGW? It's difficult to tell from your wording.

yeah sorry about that, I meant direct from Newcastle

guess it doesn't matter which airline from schiphol as KLM are the only airline to fly the Newcastle to Amsterdam route - I find it slightly ridiculous that I need to consider changing flights in another country tbh but I guess its a ridiculous commute lol

and re: nipping across schiphol, obviously I understand that haha, but it may have been possible dependant on where the departure gate was... hence the question as google was not giving results...

anyway - its probably a moot point now as was told weeks ago to expect a call and have not heard a thing - assuming the contract has gone to a dutch or German location along with all the other work since June haha - my dutch is not coming along as fast as I need it to...

You don't. I posted upthread a much more sensible way to make the journey - Flybe to Southampton, train the rest of the way, and the timings look like they'd work well enough for a typical weekly commute (assuming you aren't needed to be at your desk by 9am and can work a short Monday/Friday and longer Tuesday-Thursday as is usual for weekly commuters). Gatwick then train would also work well if there is a flight, but Southampton is a smaller and less frustating airport.

yeah, Southampton to Brighton is still a couple of hours though unless I'm missing something.... looking at the timetable the first flight gets into Southampton at 10am - unsure if they will be ok with me turning up after lunch hah

anyway this thread motivated me to chase it up and it appears that the wrk has been signed off to be done in Rotterdam because of Brexit:cry:

this would be amazing if my dutch was good enough and would actually be less hassle of a commute

so this thread has all been a waste of time anyway - hahaha, least I know for future that its a bad idea if Brighton gets floated as a location again

Something to discuss at interview. On most of my weekly commutes, arriving around 11-12 and leaving around 3 has been the norm. You work 10 hour days on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to make the shortfall up.

Is Weekly commuting a thing? Who pays for the hotels and long distance travel?

Yes, you can spot these people a mile off when taking early or late afternoon short hauls to places like Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and so on.

Peter Wilkinson of the DfT commutes from Vienna.

....And gets paid considerably more for his 3 day week than the train drivers he told lies about a couple of years ago.:D
