Shrewsbury based The Skiers lodge trading as both Easybus and Easycoach have cancelled all of their services with the traffic commissioner under short notice.

This will result in the end to the Easybus service to both Liverpool and Manchester Airports.

Service 64 between Llangollen and Llanarmon Dyrfryn Ceiriog was in the process of being retendered by Wrexham Council, with the new operator due to start a 5 year contract on the 10th September.

Andrew Martin under TSL only licenced the EasyCoach / EasyBus name and with a 8% return to Stelios.

Not surprised if they're going, tried to expand too early and too quickly (twice!) and all they did was get themselves in bother.

I noticed in a recent trip to the area that they had duplicated the Arriva route 2 between Oswestry and Wrexham, running a few minutes before the Arriva service. Presumably to try and mop-up some passengers and get some easy income on an established route.

Easycar is very alive in about 150 countries! Also, easybus still operates to London's airports and I believe in Geneva. No info on the other easygroup companies.

This is a good example of where the easybus brand has been used for services which simply do not have enough regular demand to justify fixed frequencies. I believe it was purely use of the brand and not a franchise.

I think the whole thing was down to the fact that The Skiers Lodge Ltd (TSL) won a contract to manage the Information Centre at Wrexham Bus Station, so they probably thought it was a good idea to start running their own services there too.

Only problem is they were expanding too quick, tried to put on so many services despite clearly not having enough resources to run them (buses and drivers), and obviously further problems arose which led to the closing.

They should have started a service at a time, with more being added slowly if the resources were available to do them and if it was going to be financially viable to run them.

They did run into issues even before Wrexham though which ended up with them losing a service to Arriva. Doesn't seem like they learned their lesson. I'll commend them for at least trying considering how harder it is getting to run bus services, but they did not do things the right way.

Hopefully people take notes from this debacle. Stuff like this is what is giving the industry a bad reputation.

I recently tried-out the service, using a moderately-loaded Arriva from Wrexham to Oswestry, and then waited for an Easycoach on the way back. I could find no timetable in Oswestry bus station for the Easycoach, and had to ask the driver of the incoming service, who had parked-up, what time he was to return. Eventually it left with me and one other passenger, who alighted in Gobowen, with the driver talking on his hands-free mobile while steering round the Shropshire lanes.

I noticed at several bus stops, Arriva had put up signs advising passengers who had been let-down by the non-appearance of their rivals, that their tickets could be upgraded to an Arriva service on payment of a £1 supplement.

I am not surprised they are closing.
